Gender inequality isn’t just unfair — it’s a key driver of violence against women; by promoting respect, equality, and safe relationships, we can help change the story.
The Link Between Gender Inequality and Violence Against Women - OurWatch
Research from Our Watch Australia shows that gender inequality is a key driver of violence against women. Gender inequality occurs when men are valued more than women and have greater power, resources, and opportunities. The iceberg illustration shows what lies below the surface driving violence against women.
While both men and women experience violence, the patterns are different. Women are more likely to experience violence from someone they know — often a current or former partner — and are more likely to be seriously harmed or killed. In Australia, one woman is killed every nine days by a partner.
What increases the risk?
• Normalising or excusing violence
• Exposure to violence, especially in childhood
• High stress, alcohol misuse, and harmful environments
• Backlash against gender equality
Preventing violence starts with promoting respect, equality, and safe relationships.
