𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗪𝗘'𝗥𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥❤️

James has been diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay and Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 3.

Global Developmental Delay means that James’ development in all areas has been significantly delayed. For example, he did not begin walking until he was two years old and was late to reach many other milestones as well.

Now, at five years old, James remains primarily non-verbal. He knows a small amount of Auslan, which helps him express basic needs, but he struggles to communicate his feelings or engage in conversation. This makes it challenging for him to form friendships. 😞

His mum Hayley shares, “I spend a lot of time asking him yes or no questions, interpreting his gestures, using the limited sign language he knows, and trying to understand any speech or sounds he might make. The carers at his kindy communicate with him in a similar way, though they find it more difficult to understand him.”

James’ family reached out to Variety Queensland last year and applied for an iPad and assistance for the software application Proloquo. This incredible app helps children and adults who are non-verbal to communicate by recognising graphic symbols and converting them into printed words. 💻

Thanks to a grant from Variety, James has found his voice, giving him an opportunity to engage more fully at school, at home, and within his community! 🙏🏼

💥THE IMPACT WE'RE CREATING TOGETHER💥

Back in February Variety shared an update on 15-year-old Lucy-Rose, a Variety Heart Scholarship recipient for the arts.
Born with a limb difference, Lucy-Rose has no fingers on her right hand. Facing bullying and prejudice, she found solace in music and dance from a young age. While the arts proved to be both therapy and a haven for Lucy-Rose, her multifaceted talents have also shone through.
She updated us about all the workshops, gigs and awards she has been winning, and shared, “I hope that 2025 continues to be filled with music and dancing – and just doing what I love. My dream is to keep pushing myself in musical theatre, my music and dancing and take all the opportunities that I can!”
Lucy is keeping busy with year 11 and juggling her extracurricular schedule and as you’ll see from this photo, also has earned her learner’s licence. 🙌🏼

Lucy-Rose said: “Thank you so, so, so much Variety supporters for helping me accomplish so many dreams. You gave the extra helping hand I needed 😉 and made all the awesome things I did last year possible. Your support truly makes me realise what beautiful people there are in this world, and I feel so lucky and grateful.
