What happens when hundreds of people contribute to a single artwork?

Join artist Alice Rigby for Self Portrait as a House Plant, a unique two-day collaborative drawing project at The Write Gallery.

Across a series of artist-led workshops, participants of all ages will explore self-expression through experimental drawing, reflection, movement, memory, objects, emotions and mark-making, all while contributing to a giant 25-metre artwork created over 24 hours.

The finished artwork will then be revealed, before being carefully deconstructed and shared as part of the final experience.

No artistic experience required. Just curiosity, creativity and a willingness to be part of something bigger than yourself!

โœจ Nearly every hand in the room was in the air when award-winning author and illustrator Peter Carnavas visited Rockville State School.

Around 70 students, representing almost a third of the school, eagerly shared ideas, answered questions and immersed themselves in the creative process of storytelling.

From creating quirky characters and exploring story ideas to discovering how Blue Whale Blues was brought to life through drawing, painting and collage, the students were captivated from start to finish. There were plenty of excited "that's so cool!" moments, particularly when Peter shared his illustration process and drew live for the children.

One of the highlights was watching the room instantly settle as Peter played a tune on his harmonica before launching into another creative activity.

Peter also shared a simple but powerful reminder with the students: if you want to get better at writing, drawing or anything else, keep practising.

A wonderful afternoon of creativity, imagination and inspiration!

Emma recently facilitated our โ€˜Write a Bookโ€™ workshop for Early Childhood educators from across Queensland, from Longreach to Logan and beyond. Together, they explored the process of creating children's picture books and enjoyed an immersive tour of our Under the Sea exhibition inspired by Peter Carnavas' Blue Whale Blues.

It was a privilege to share conversations around literacy, creativity, storytelling and imagination, and through the feedback received, gain a firsthand insight into the impact these ideas will have in classrooms and communities across the state.

As part of our Under the Sea exhibition, inspired by Blue Whale Blues by award-winning author and illustrator Peter Carnavas, we had the pleasure of taking Peter to Toowoomba Anglican School for a special workshop with 20 talented art students.

These students had worked incredibly hard to earn their place in the workshop, and what followed was a masterclass in creativity, storytelling, and embracing imperfection.

From blind self-portraits that had the room laughing, to potatoes bursting with personality and emotion, Peter showed students that great art isn't about being perfect. It's about observation, expression, and having the confidence to create.

"If it's wobbly, embrace it!"

Students explored character design, body language, visual storytelling, and the role colour plays in communicating emotion. They learned how illustrators create characters that remain consistent from page to page and how a simple silhouette can tell a story before a single word is read.

Peter also took students behind the scenes of creating his soon-to-be-released book Kid, sharing original artwork, character sketches, chapter planning, and the publishing journey from manuscript to printed book. There were plenty of gasps when students learned that his editor provided more than 1,000 pieces of feedback throughout the process. A wonderful reminder that feedback is part of creating something great!

The highlight for many was seeing Peter's original artwork up close. The room erupted with delight and applause as students gained a rare glimpse into the creative process of a professional author and illustrator.

A massive thank you to arts teacher extraordinaire Nadine Reynolds (pictured), a wonderful friend of The Lighthouse and passionate advocate for creative learning opportunities. Nadine has supported our exhibitions for years, with multiple classes contributing artwork that has been proudly displayed in The Write Gallery.

Thank you, Nadine, for the opportunities you create for your students and for your ongoing support of literacy, creativity, and the arts in our community.

It was a pleasure to welcome the 2026 Toowoomba Regional Youth Leaders to The Write Gallery at The Lighthouse over the past fortnight for a series of Public Speaking Workshops led by the talented Shideh.

The highly interactive sessions focused on building confidence, strengthening communication skills, developing body language, and preparing for future opportunities, including job interviews. Drawing on her background in drama, Shideh brought learning to life through engaging, hands-on activities.

As part of their 12-month leadership journey, these inspiring young people have already been contributing their voices and perspectives to initiatives, programs, and events across our region. These workshops provided practical tools to support their ongoing growth and development as future leaders.

We are always proud to see The Write Gallery used as a space for learning, creativity, connection, and personal growth.

Congratulations to all of the Regional Youth Leaders who took part, and thank you to the Toowoomba Regional Council Youth Programs team for choosing The Lighthouse as part of their leadership journey.

Lighthouse EOFY Giving Campaign ๐Ÿ“š

Every donation, no matter the size, helps place books into the hands and homes of children who need them most.

Hereโ€™s what your support can help make possible:

๐Ÿ“– $5 provides a book bundle for one child
๐Ÿ“š $125 provides a book bundle for an entire class to take home and keep
โœจ $375 helps fund an author visit to a school, inspiring a whole cohort of children through storytelling and creativity

The books we distribute are gifted for children to keep, helping create opportunities for literacy, learning and connection beyond the classroom.

Research consistently shows that children who grow up with books in the home experience stronger literacy outcomes and greater educational opportunities over time.

We know times are tough right now, and not everyone can give big โ€” but small acts of generosity truly do add up and make a meaningful difference.

๐Ÿ’™ Please donate here: https://drct-thelighthousetoowoomba.prod.supporterhub.net/donations/donations

Thank you for helping us grow a community where more children have access to books, literacy and the lifelong opportunities that come with them.
