Help Save The Old Toora Bank of Victoria

Help Save The Old Toora Bank of Victoria Help Andrew Scott restore the beautiful old wooden Bank of Victoria in Stanley St Toora.

Andrew is capable of doing the work; you can help by making a donation, large or small, to purchase materials and equipment.

Bertie the Bank Cat says we're sorry there haven't been many posts lately 🙄.

Working on the Stanley St facade during a Gipps Land winter is not really possible, so as well as labouring away with love on the interior of the building, Andrew has been focusing on earning a modest living through his trade (mechanical maintenance of classic cars in Melbourne) and various other small jobs for locals who appreciate his commitment, wide range of skills, and attention to detail.

But summer is coming, and you can soon expect to see extensive scaffolding - paid for by the generosity of many of you 🙏❤ - arising at the southern end of the building.

Thanks to all for your interest, encouragement and generosity.

If you could spare some time this Saturday 10 th of August we will load up some trailers and take them to the tip to get recycled as mulch.
We will meet at the Orchard ,18A Mill Street Toora at 10 am and be finished by 12 noon.
If you’d like to help please leave a comment.
Or if you’d like to help at another time let me know."

This is the magnificent original seal on the front of the safe in the former Wonthaggi Bank of Victoria. It's about 8" wide.

Inscription reads: "Milner's / Patent/ Fire Resisting/ Thief Resisting Door No 2"

Sadly, the one on the safe in the Toora BOV was less thief-resisting: it was prised off and stolen by someone who broke into the bank years ago while it was unoccupied 😪.

If you took it and you still have it, Andrew will take (buy) it back with gratitude and no questions asked.

Toora BOV restorer Andrew Scott visited the former Wonthaggi BOV yesterday. About ten years younger than Andrew's property (built 1915) the bank has been safe in the hands of a single family since its closure in 1945 ❤.

Now a successful book exchange which also sells some clothing, the building retains a huge amount of its original interior wood panelling and infrastructure. It shares many features with the Toora BOV: Andrew is committed to as faithful a restoration as possible, and much information was gleaned from the visit.

As a result of the Toora BOV project, and another involving the production of a book of photographs of abandoned houses, Shauna Wood, founder and admin of the [Abandoned Australia Derelict Houses and More] page, membership 230,0000+, has reviewed the page's policy on crowdfunding.

The page now allows posts with crowdfunding information for selected projects which align with Abandoned Australia's purpose and criteria.

Andrew and I feel very honoured that Shauna, who is based in Mount Gambier, has also made a personal donation to the BOV campaign 🙏.

Spent the day yesterday with another beautiful BOV-saver ❤❤. Nonagenarian John O'Callaghan is the last surviving member of the volunteer team who brought the Port Albert Bank of Victoria back from the dead in the 1970s. He tells me that back then every window was smashed, the interior fittings either sold off or looted, and a farmer was storing his potatoes in the banking chamber 😳. Today the building houses the award-winning Port Albert Maritime Museum ❤❤. Photo Cheryl Kane.

Thanks so much to ABC Gippsland Zaida Glibanovic (producer) and Mim Hook who picked up on the Toora Bank of Victoria restoration story and spoke to Andrew and myself on the radio this morning. Fabulous wireless debut, Andrew Scott 👏👏: listeners will be thinking you've been doing that all your life 😆❤.

Special thanks to Mim for tackling the "It's just your house ... why should I donate to help you fix it?" question, which (sadly, in my view) is a major deterrent to donating in some people's minds.

It's a beautiful, historic building. Everyone wants it fixed. Now thanks [entirely] to Andrew it IS being fixed. What does it matter who lives in it 🤔🤔?

Join the small but sensational - and growing - band of good humans who are unselfishly giving Andrew a hand up with his project. These people understand that the bank will be there a lot longer than Andrew will: he's just the current custodian, exactly like me across the road with the old bakery. The long-term beneficiary will be the town of Toora.
