TIMOTHY COOK: KURLUWUKARI | Opening Event in New York next week!

Timothy Cook: Kurluwukari marks D Lan Galleries’ second solo presentation of the artist’s work. Our first, at Melbourne Art Fair 2025, presented his new large-scale bark paintings for the first time. Kurluwukari builds upon that exhibition, bringing bark and linen together in New York to reveal the continuity and ongoing experimentation within Cook’s practice.

It is a privilege to present this exhibition in collaboration with Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association () and to bring this important new body of work to audiences in the United States.

We hope you can join us in New York for the opening event on Thursday 10 September, from 6-8pm, to experience these remarkable works in person. We are also thrilled to announce that we will be joined by Colin Heenan-Puruntatameri and Timothy’s grandson, Wally Brooks, as well as Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association’s Manager, Will Heathcote for a special evening celebrating this important artist and his work.

Please join us tomorrow, Friday 28 August, 5-7pm, to celebrate the opening of Pedro Wonaeamirri’s exhibition ‘Awirankini jilamara kapi purinjirringuwi: new designs on wood’ at STATION Gadigal / Sydney.

To mark the occasion, Pedro will share a special performance alongside Telstra NATSIAA Award winning artist Colin Heenan-Puruntatameri and artist Walter Brooks – offering a unique opportunity to experience the cultural knowledge and stories that underpin contemporary living Tiwi culture, Pedro’s practice and the works in the exhibition.

D Lan Galleries is honoured to present Timothy Cook’s first solo exhibition in the United States, in collaboration with Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association. Presented at our Upper East Side gallery in New York, Kurluwukari - meaning ‘circle’ in Tiwi language - brings together a major new body of work across bark and linen.

Widely regarded as the modern master of Tiwi painting, Cook works exclusively with natural ochres and pigments drawn from the Country around his home community of Milikapiti on Melville Island. Ground and prepared by hand, the pigments are applied in bold, rich fields to linen and seasoned stringybark, harvested and prepared at Jilamara. As a result, Cook’s practice is inseparable from Country and remains rooted in the living landscape of the Tiwi Islands, its seasons and Tiwi identity.

We are delighted to announce the release of the exhibition catalogue on 27 August, offering a first look at this remarkable new body of work. We look forward to sharing more details shortly…

Congratulations Colin Heenan-Puruntatameri of Jilamara Arts for taking home this year’s Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards Multi-Media Category! 💫💫💫

Colin is a central part of Wurrungura — Jilamara’s digital archive and multi-media centre and an amazing advocate for the use of new media technologies in celebrating Tiwi art and culture.

Ngirramini Ngini Amparruwu (The story of the widow) is a video projection with accompanying carved and ochre painted objects used in the dance. The work celebrates the performative foundations of Tiwi art-making and the important role song-lines and yoyi (dance) play in Tiwi story-telling and creative practice.

A proud Tiwi artist from Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association based on Wulirankuwu, Michelle Pulatuwayu Woody Minnapinni creates traditional tunga (bark baskets) and parmijini (ceremonial headbands and armbands) using knowledge and techniques passed down through countless generations.

Her collaborative practice brings together collecting materials on Country, making and ceremony, keeping Tiwi cultural knowledge, stories and traditions alive while passing them on to future generations.

This is the final week to view the exhibition "Ngiya Murrakupupuni amintiya Jilamara (My Country and Art): Michelle Pulatuwayu Woody Minnapinni" and we are looking back on a truly incredible exhibition and artist residency by artist and curator Michelle Pulatuwayu Woody Minnapinni.

It was great to see Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Tiwi Football Final at Wurrumiyanga yesterday. It was even greater to see Mantiyupwi Traditional Owner and senior Ngaruwanajirri artist Gordon Pupangamirri present him with an artwork celebrating ancient living Tiwi culture and a financial impact statement outlining the incredible economic, employment and social benefits of the five arts and culture centres operating on the Tiwi Islands.

These not-for-profit Aboriginal community controlled, owned and governed charities collectively employ and support a large percentage of the remote Tiwi population and draw significant revenue from around Australia and overseas directly into the island’s small communities. They support Tiwi governed cultural maintenance, intergenerational professional development and career pathways for young Tiwi people not only as internationally recognised creatives, but also cultural ambassadors and arts industry professionals working with historical collections, exhibitions and art fair outcomes.

We want to see these amazing organisations recognised for the significant contribution they make with sustainable long-term sector support.

We have just had a great weekend on Gadigal Land at the new look National Indigenous Art Fair 💫💫💫

Now located at Barangaroo Reserve Cutaway, the fair is amazing celebration of indigenous art from across the country. A big shout out to First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation and everyone involved for growing this event to new heights!
