We're heading to the Port Campbell Flower Show!

🌸We need a little extra help. Could you lend us a hand to pot up some seedlings?

We will be getting our hands dirty on the next two Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Bring gardening gloves 🧤

Knobby Club-rush's dense clumps of deep-green, strap-like foliage and distinctive rounded flower heads make it an attractive landscaping plant, while its strong root system helps stabilise soils.

We've been a bit slow in realising its full versatility:

🏖️ Helps stabilise soil
Its dense root system and clumping growth habit help hold soil in place, making it useful for erosion-prone sites.

🐦 Provides habitat
Dense foliage provides shelter, cover and seed for small animals, including frogs, skinks, insects and birds.

💧 Low maintenance
Once established, Knobby Club-rush is tough and drought tolerant. It requires little attention in a suitable location.

🌿 Excellent coastal plant
Well adapted to salt spray, coastal winds, sandy soils and exposed conditions.

🌱 A great garden plant
Its architectural form works beautifully in native, coastal and contemporary gardens. It can be planted individually as a feature or in groups to create a strong, natural-looking mass.

Our sweet bursaria seeds have germinated, thanks to a little winter magic — and a helpful tip from Friends of Mt Leura Inc: ice on top, twice, did the trick. These seedlings will be available next year, ready for local revegetation and biodiversity.

Sweet bursaria is an important local shrub that supports native insects and helps maintain healthy ecosystems, including helping keep native budworm in check.

The native budworm, Helicoverpa punctigera, is a pasture and crop pest whose larvae feed on young plants, reducing pasture growth and productivity. By supporting the insects that help keep budworm numbers under control, sweet bursaria plays a small but important role in the wider landscape.

We’ll prick them out in early November, and everyone is invited to lend a hand and learn more.

We love it when people return or give us Hiko trays 💚

You know our 40-cell, A4-sized Hiko tray? ... We don’t use many other types of pots, but hikos are washed and reused in our nursery.

Some garden plant pots have recently been left at our community nursery. We were disappointed to see this, as it hasn’t happened before, and we hope it doesn’t happen again. 🌱

For reference, Corangamite Shire Council advises that:

🟡 Empty and clean brown and green plant pots stamped #5 can go in your yellow recycling bin.

🔴 Black plant pots go in the red landfill bin.

Please don’t dump unwanted pots at the nursery. Thank you for helping us keep our nursery tidy and, where possible, reuse and recycle. 🌿

Happy ending: Today an angel called Garth bought a mixed tray of flowering lovelies and asked about pots. We told him our sorry tale. He rang another nursery that verbally accepted the lot. And Garth took them all away, saying he didn't like the idea of them going to landfill. We know; us too. Thankyou Garth.
