💧 Upgrade your farm dam, upgrade your water quality.

ANU Sustainable Farms research shows that fencing and revegetating farm dams can lead to cleaner water, healthier livestock, reduced erosion, and increased biodiversity.

A well-designed planting uses species suited to different zones around the dam:

🌱 *Carex appressa* (Tall Sedge) and *Poa labillardierei* (River Tussock Grass) are ideal for dam margins and buffer areas, helping filter runoff, stabilise soils, and tolerate occasional inundation.

🌿 *Ficinia nodosa* (Knobby Clubrush) thrives at the water's edge, handling both wet conditions and dry periods as water levels fluctuate.

Together, these native species create a resilient vegetated buffer that protects your dam, improves stock water quality, and delivers long-term benefits for your farm and the environment.

We've got these plants in the Heytesbury Community Nursery for planting out now. DM or email [email protected]

We spotted Enchylaena tomentosa (Ruby Saltbush) in our fabulous local 'Gardens for Wildlife' booklets — so naturally we decided to grow some 🌱

This hardy indigenous shrub is packed with benefits: drought tolerant, great for habitat gardening, attractive to birds, and covered in beautiful edible red berries. It’s also excellent for tough spots, coping well with poor soils, wind, and dry conditions.

A fantastic addition to wildlife-friendly gardens and revegetation projects alike.
Ruby Saltbush is now available for purchase through our nursery — get in touch if you’d like to add some to your garden or project. DM us or email [email protected]

Ever wondered about the mysterious malleefowl? 🐦

These remarkable native birds build giant nesting mounds, hatch their eggs using heat from the sun and compost, and are one of Australia’s most fascinating bushland survivors.

Come along next Friday night joining to hear more about the incredible life of the malleefowl, the challenges they face, and how people are helping protect them. You’ll never look at a pile of leaves the same way again!

One of the plants we keep coming back to in our Landcare projects is Poa labillardieri🌱

This hardy indigenous tussock grass does so much heavy lifting in revegetation projects — helping stabilise soil, reduce erosion, provide habitat for wildlife, and improve biodiversity outcomes.

It’s tough enough to handle wet winters and dry summers, while still looking beautiful in natural landscapes and indigenous gardens.

A quiet achiever and one of our favourite species to grow.

If you’d like to include "Poa lab" in your next project or garden, feel free to get in touch with us. PM or email [email protected].

Shelterbelts deliver real on-farm benefits 🌱🐑🐄

Research shows they can:
• Increase pasture production by up to 8%
• Boost dairy milk production by around 10%
• Improve wool production by 30%+ and livestock weight gain by 20%+
• Reduce lamb mortality by 10%
• Help control pests and improve water quality

They also provide carbon capture, better water infiltration and important wildlife habitat. Even a 10m-wide shelterbelt can make a valuable biodiversity contribution, while wider plantings support even more bird species.

Recommended shelterbelt width is 10m minimum, with 30m considered ideal.

When to plant? 20 years ago was the best time. Next best is now. Shelterbelt seedlings are available at the Community nursery. Reach out. Send us a message, email [email protected], or order through the link.

Great landscapes aren’t planted—they’re layered 🌿

Our native seedling mixes combine trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers to recreate the structure of natural systems.

That means:
🐃Shelterbelts that protect livestock at ground level
🐦Habitat that brings back small woodland birds
🐞Grasses that create microclimates and support diverse life
🦋Fallen timber that adds complexity for reptiles and birdlife

All species are selected to be mostly local to your area—because local plants build stronger ecosystems.

Reach out to plan your mix.
