Torres Strait Hike for Health

Torres Strait Hike for Health Circumnavigating the Torres Strait islands by foot in 2023 to raise money for the charity Drug ARM. Many are simply grateful to receive a friendly smile.

For 174 years, the charity Drug ARM has helped people, families and communities impacted by alcohol and other drugs to achieve positive transformations. In the past year alone, the Drug ARM Street Outreach Service (SOS) teams delivered support on around 8,000 occasions to people in need, with their vans making regular visits to more than 20 sites in Queensland, involving more than 100 volunteers.

On some nights, the team saw queues of up to 80 people lining up for support. By being able to offer a hot drink, a sandwich or snack, the volunteers are able to spend time engaging people in compassionate conversations, which may also include offering information or referrals around alcohol and other drug support. Even small acts of support like this can become big steps towards transforming a vulnerable person's life for the better. Since 2017, Harold Peacock has led charity Hikes for Health that have raised over $20,000 – all of which has supported the work of Drug ARM. After trekking through the Queensland rainforest, Australian alps and the Simpson Desert, this year he's heading to the magnificent Torres Strait with the ambition to circumnavigate its islands by foot from the 10th to the 22nd of August 2023. The goal is to raise awareness of the beautiful communities and environment in Australia's far north, and to raise money for the valuable work of Drug ARM.
