Clean-Up #10 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | Yesterday afternoon (23/11/2025), I cleaned down the driveway of the police station and onto the Paluma Street side. I found an area where lots of soft plastic had blown into and got stuck.

To no surprise, I located a smoking area around the police station, where it appears the smokers have a habit of throwing their cigarette butts directly into a drain or in the nearby vicinity of the drain; meaning when it rains, they all get flushed away into the creeks, never to be seen again, except the filters are plastic, sink to the bottom and don’t degrade. I saw just how many there were so I counted them. A whopping 1,623 cigarette butts removed from an area not much larger than the length and width of car, which ended up being around 4.65 litres of cigarette butts. Truly astonishing. We’ve even had a few spells of heavy rain recently meaning that a large number of them likely got washed away. I’ll be speaking with the relevant parties to try and have this issue/behaviour rectified.

Clean-Up #9 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | On Sunday (16/11/2025), I continued cleaning from where I finished up the day before. I cleaned the grassy areas in the car park of the police station, which had a lot of old bulky items scattered around the place which served no purpose. The rest was litter located throughout the grass and leafy garden beds all in just a 350 square metre area.

I nearly got stun by wasps whilst cleaning up the leafy garden bed. I felt something hit my face, looked up and observed some very unhappy wasps. I don’t think I’ve ever jumped away from something so quick. There was a heap of soft plastic litter underneath their tree branch as well. I couldn’t leave it behind so I gave them a few minutes to settle down and then I almost commando crawled underneath their branch to not upset them, which was successful! The things I do to remove litter…

Clean-Up #8 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | Yesterday afternoon, I cleaned up the same areas I did two weeks ago. It was relatively clean, however, we’ve had some heavy rain recently which uncovered some buried rubbish in the dirt/grass areas. I was finally able to move on to some new areas, I did around the car park of the police station and did a grassy area behind a radio and electronics workshop, which was relatively clean. I was expecting it to be worse.

I’ve got two weeks off so I’m hoping to get out and about most afternoons and pick up some rubbish and move onto some new areas which I haven’t cleaned before which will be exciting!

Clean-Up #7 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | This afternoon, after 2 months of doing no clean-ups I decided it was time to re-clean the areas I’ve already done being around the mechanics, car park, a social area and police station. Despite my enthusiasm, the temperature was a hot and humid 33 degrees celsius.

For the most part, it was cleaning up what I had previously missed, however, there was new rubbish outside the mechanics containing plenty of zip ties, washers, rubber etc. I removed the remainder of the black plastic in the garden bed of my last clean-up, and I had a look at the other garden bed, which previously had hundreds of dumped cigarette butts, and I was pleased to see in over two months there were only a handful of new cigarette butts and that one of the nearby bins was full of cigarette butts. Maybe the message is finally getting through! Yay!

Clean-Up #6 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | On Monday, I continued cleaning where I finished up last time. I moved onto another garden bed which was filled with thin black plastic (put in that garden bed years ago as a terrible form of w**d matting). It’s been so long that it’s now exposed and disintegrating, and most certainly not stopping any w**ds. I sifted through and did my best to get it all. There was the occasional cigarette butt, other generic soft plastic rubbish, zip ties and concrete throughout as well. I checked my previously cleaned garden bed and there was already a handful of new cigarette butts in there…

Clean-Up #5 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | Yesterday (16/08/2025), I cleaned up the remainder of the car park next to the mechanics workshop. I then worked my way into a hang out spot for after work drinks. Despite there being several bins around, a beautiful garden bed full of succulents was the dumping spot of pretty much every cigarette butt in that pile of rubbish. I’ve still got more of that area to go so that’s where I’ll start off next time.

Clean-Up #4 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | On Tuesday, I cleaned up a car park and vehicle wash bay next to a mechanics workshop. For the most part, it was just tiny little bits and pieces of litter such as zip ties, tiny bits of rubber and metal (nuts, bolts, screws etc). This was time consuming to collect and I didn’t make it very far in the just under two hours I was picking up litter for. The vehicle wash bay provided the larger items of litter which were old rags, rubber seals, a jumper, a pole, lids, a spray bottle and wet wipes container. It’s been over a year since I last cleaned this area up so in all honesty it wasn’t that bad.

Clean-Up #3 in Thuringowa Central (Townsville) | Yesterday (20/07/2025), after just over a year, I cleaned up around my accommodation again for approximately 2 hours. I didn’t make it very far and it was pretty much just cleaning up all the stuff I missed a year ago, so thankfully not a lot of new rubbish in that time. It was mainly just dumped bricks, concrete, cigarette butts and broken glass. I look forward to getting out and about a bit more frequently in the future whilst I’m restricted on driving.

Good evening, all,

I have some unfortunate news being that Litter Legends' volunteer clean-ups are going to have to be put on hold over the next few months at a minimum. This is due to myself suffering from an unexpected medical episode specifically a tonic-clonic seizure whilst I was finishing work on Wednesday evening last week (02/07/2025).

As a result, my drivers licence has been medically suspended for a period of six (6) months by the Department of Transport and Main Roads with this obviously affecting my ability to transport our equipment to our clean-ups and transport the rubbish to the dump.

I will do my best to get out and about in my local area to do clean-ups by myself just like the good old days when time permits.

Over the next few months, I will have to go through several medical evaluations to determine if I am a fit and proper person to be operating a motor vehicle again but I'm hopeful that this is just a once-off and all should be back to normal in a few months time.

I thank you all in advance for your support.

Kind regards, Layne from Litter Legends.

Clean-Up #5 along Dalrymple Road - On Sunday, Sharon, new volunteer Will and I progressed another 200-metres along the roadside towards Shaw Road.

We found several wine bottles of the same brand throughout this stretch of roadside some still intact with the others smashed to pieces. Otherwise, it was all the same culprits such as cigarette butts, fast food packaging, polystyrene and pieces of aluminium.

We welcomed new volunteer, Will, who is a part of a couple of the scout groups in Townsville. Will naturally had a like-minded passion for the keeping the environment clean, so he slipped into cleaning with ease.

We removed:
- 1.75 bags of litter (0.25 recyclables - 15 containers)
- 2 pieces of hard plastic (20L Poison Container)
- 1 piece of scrap metal
- 1 piece of rubber
- 1 car part (hubcap)
- Total Weight: 20kg

Clean-Up #4 along Dalrymple Road - Yesterday Sharon and I began progressing further along the roadside towards Shaw Road. It was a good feeling to be finally moving forward.

We cleaned the last bit of the steep overgrown slopes next to the roadside before getting started on the roadside. It was just the usual culprits being cigarette butts and fast food packaging. We did locate lots of old buried pieces of shredded aluminium and broken glass bottles in the dirt. The tree line on the outbound side of the road had heaps of polystyrene and severely disintegrated plastic packaging. We also picked up in excess of 10 vapes in addition to all the packaging located for them (as per the photo).

We removed:
- 1.75 bags of litter (0.25 recyclables - 23 containers)
- 10 pieces of concrete
- 2 pieces of polystyrene
- 1 piece of rubber
- Total Weight: 20kg

Clean-Up #3 along Dalrymple Road - Today Sharon and I continued cleaning the steep overgrown slopes next to the roadside in Bohle Plains.

The roadside is guttered with run-offs every 30-metres. The bottom of these run-offs is where all the litter collects overtime and gets buried/covered in dirt. A bit of digging, pulling out w**ds and stomping revealed bottles, cans, pieces of soft and hard plastic, lighters, cigarette butts and even a part of a phone and an asthma puffer. Then whilst searching the bush line, I spotted a 4WD tyre, and one by one, spotted the other three. Getting them out required pushing them through thick grass/w**ds for 200-metres back to the trailer which took a bit of physicality and time.

We removed:
- 1.5 bags of litter (0.25 recyclables - 20 containers)
- 9 pieces of concrete
- 4 tyres (4WD)
- 3 pieces of scrap metal (1 electrical pit lid)
- 1 piece of hard plastic
- Total Weight: 140kg
