🏹 Try something different. Discover Japanese archery.

Looking for a new challenge that combines skill, focus and the satisfaction of shooting a traditional Japanese bow?

Join the West Australian Kyudo Association’s two-week introductory course!

You’ll learn the basics, practise with a Japanese bow and have opportunities for supervised shooting, progressing at your own pace.

Learn with:
🥇 Sam, 2nd Dan—our recent National Individual Champion.
🏹 Sean, 3rd Dan—an experienced kyudo practitioner.
🏆 Ed, 2nd Dan—an educator and member of our national championship-winning team.

Expect practical coaching, a welcoming atmosphere and a challenge that rewards patience and persistence. We’ll introduce the traditions and etiquette as you learn, with plenty of emphasis on developing your shooting skills.

No archery experience needed. Course equipment provided.

What a wonderful weekend at the AKA National Seminar and Taikai!

As President of the West Australian Kyudo Association, I’m incredibly proud of our WA team and of the enormous amount of work that went into helping make this event happen. So many people contributed their time, energy and support, and I’d especially like to acknowledge Peter for the huge amount of organising he undertook behind the scenes.

It was also a very special weekend for me personally. I was surprised and honoured to be asked to perform Yawatashi on the opening day of the seminar.

Opportunities to learn and practise the ceremonial aspects of Kyudo in Australia are relatively limited, and much of our learning has necessarily come from books, videos and the instruction we are fortunate to receive when visiting Sensei are with us. Being able to perform Yawatashi at a national seminar, receive direct feedback, and learn where I can improve was an invaluable experience.

On the day of the Taikai, I was also given the opportunity to participate in Yawatashi again, this time as a Kaizoe. It was another valuable chance to deepen my understanding of ceremonial Kyudo and learn through practical experience.

On behalf of WAKA, I would like to sincerely thank our visiting Sensei from Japan and Canada for generously sharing their knowledge and experience with us.

Thank you also to everyone who travelled to attend, to those who helped organise and support the seminar and Taikai, and to all those who competed.

Congratulations to our Taikai winners, and to everyone who took part in the competition.

It was a very full weekend of hard work, learning, friendship and Kyudo, and I’m very proud of what our WA team contributed.

A wonderful first day of our National Kyudo Seminar! 🎯🇦🇺🇯🇵🇨🇦
We’ve had a fantastic day of learning, practice and friendship. A heartfelt thank you to our Sensei for sharing their knowledge and guidance, and to everyone who joined us — especially those who travelled from interstate to be here.
It’s been wonderful to practise together, reconnect with old friends and make new ones. We’re looking forward to another day of learning tomorrow! 🏹

Today some of our higher-ranked members performed Yawatashi before the video shinsa.
Yawatashi (矢渡し) literally translates to "the passing of the arrow." It is a highly prestigious, ceremonial shooting demonstration (sharei) performed at the very beginning of a major event, such as a tournament (taikai), promotional grade test (dan test), or seminar.
Well done to everyone who sat the exam!

We are proud to announce that the Fourth Australian National Kyudo Seminar and Taikai has been officially certified as an anniversary event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia. 🇦🇺🇯🇵

Bringing together kyudo practitioners and teachers from Japan, Australia and beyond, this special event celebrates the enduring friendship between our two countries through the shared practice of kyudo.

We are honoured to be part of this significant anniversary and look forward to welcoming everyone to the event.

The AKA is honored to announce the following sensei have generously given their time to travel to Perth, Western Australia:
• Takeuchi, Masakuni (竹内正邦) | Kyoshi 7 Dan | Sendai, Japan

• Yoneda, Tetsurou (米田哲郎) | Kyoshi 6 Dan | Sendai, Japan

• Takahashi, Mie (高橋美枝) | Renshi 6 Dan | Toronto, Canada

This is a great chance to train with high-ranking instructors, and to train and socialise with fellow Kyudo practitioners around Australia and meet with some of our international friends!
Current schedule (subject to changes):
• Friday, 2 October - Saturday, 3 October 2026 9:00am - 4:00pm: National Seminar

• Sunday, 4 October 2026 9:00am - 3:00pm: National Taikai

The Seminar and Taikai is open to all current financial members of Australian Kyudo Association, and members of affiliated and associated associations of the International Kyudo Federation ('IKYF'), with a minimum experience level of 6 months of regular practice. Please note that the event is not open to anyone not affiliated with the aforementioned organisations.
