STATEMENT AGAINST THE ANTISEMITISM ATTACKS ON THE JEWISH PEOPLE
The Aborigines Advancement League (AAL) the oldest continuing Aboriginal organisation in Australia makes a stand against racism and antisemitism.
We know what racism is like as we have experienced and continue to experience it as Aboriginal people. As recently as September 2025, the AAL stood up against the attack on Camp Sovereignty by a white supremacist group.
This time we make a stand for the Jewish community in Australia. We condemn the horrific shooting that occurred in Sydney on the 14th of December 2025. We stand with the Jewish community and against the growing antisemitism that is on the rise in Australia and around the world.
The Aborigines Advancement League is a proud Aboriginal organisation serving our community with Cultural Integrity, Cultural Safety, Cultural Respect and Knowledge. Our traditional values challenge us to care for country, respect our Elders, look after our families, our people and care about the wider community.
It is at this time that we remember what Uncle William Cooper did 87 years ago when he courageously led a march against the cruel treatment of the Jewish people in Germany. On 6 December 1938 less than a month after Kristallnacht when Jewish people were targeted in widespread rioting and looting across Germany, Uncle William Cooper led the march to the German consulate in Melbourne to condemn the ‘cruel persecution of the Jewish people by the N**i government in Germany’. German officials refused to take the written condemnation, but the protest is seen by many as the only one of its kind in the world.
Australia is seeing an increase in violence, hateful ideology and extremism. Every person in Australia needs to stand against this kind of vitriolic hate by calling it out when it happens. We need to be upstanders. We cannot remain silent when this treatment occurs against our citizens. As Martin Luther King Jnr said: “History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamour of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.” We don’t want to be remembered as being a country that remains silent in the face of any evil inflicted on our communities.
Today we stand in solitude and in the spirit of brotherhood with the Jewish communities who have made Australia their home. We totally condemn any antisemitism and hatred toward them.
