Squigglez' dog friend did something naughty, and they both got locked away, without water. Some nice people that understand you can't leave animals without adequate water did the right thing and took them both into care.

We found out not long after putting Squigglez up for rehoming, that she had a large hernia, so wasn't really suitable to go directly to a new home. So we agreed to take her. It's not exactly a good time to be taking on any more special cases, but sometimes it just has to happen.

Squigglez is a beautiful little girl. She's only a few months old and on her 3rd home. It's a bit rough.
She's doing well though. Currently she's in quarantine and will be for 2 weeks. Then we will introduce her to Peggy, who needs a little friend. She's listening very intently to all the pig chatter around her, and her tail is wagging constantly.

We said we'd take on Squigglez if we could get her some sponsors, and she got one. Thank you to that gentleman, and look out for some updates and more photos and info soon.

This is what our bank account has been looking like lately:

Water. Water. And more water. 💧💧💧

The drought is continuing, and we are rapidly approaching a full year of very little rainfall. The bore gave us some much-needed relief through winter, pumping away while it could, but it simply isn't supplying enough to get us through the warmer months.

It's all a bit s**t, really 💩

We are still trying to find some help to get the Fodder Room reassembled. When we finally get it up and running, it will be a huge blessing. The aim is to improve the pigs' nutrition while reducing some of our feeding costs, which would take a little pressure off when we're already buying water, feed and, when we can manage it, hay.

The pigs are desperate for some green stuff. A small bale of lucerne is now hitting around $40 a bale in town, so buying it as often as we'd like just isn't realistic. Sometimes I go around trimming our tea tree bushes and the pigs absolutely love it, but sadly there isn't quite enough time, or tea tree to feed 120 + pigs every day 🌿🐽

We keep looking for ways to make things stretch further. That's what we do here.

After our Pig Farrier Workshop, assuming I haven't completely lost my mind by then 🙈😂, we'll also be announcing something pretty exciting.

It's a big thing for me and for the sanctuary, and we're going to need plenty of support to make it happen. But one thing at a time!

For now, if you have a spare dollar or two that you'd like to put towards our water bill, it genuinely helps. 💧

We know the world isn't exactly in a great place at the moment, and that many people are feeling the pinch themselves. We understand that. We simply keep doing what we can to keep the Pig Inn afloat and keep the pigs fed, watered, safe and cared for.

Little things really do count.

And the third photo is yesterday's magnificent rainbow, which arrived after an impressive amount of thunder...
..and approximately four drops of rain. 🤦‍♀️🌧️🌈

Ben from The Farrier Group is travelling all the way from the USA to Australia, specifically to teach us how to properly care for, assess and trim pig hooves.

And no, he's not teleporting here.

Getting an experienced pig farrier from the other side of the world to Australia costs money. Your ticket helps cover Ben's travel and expenses so that we can actually make this workshop happen.

This is a non-profit event, not a money-making exercise. We have deliberately kept ticket prices as low as we reasonably can because we want people who care for pigs to be able to access this knowledge.

And Australia desperately needs it.

Pig hoof care is something many of us have had to figure out ourselves. There are very few people here with specialised knowledge, and getting it wrong can have serious consequences for a pig's comfort, mobility and long-term health. We know this, because we've seen it.

This workshop is an opportunity to learn from someone who does this professionally and who works specifically with pigs.

Is this a cute photo? Yes. Absolutely. 😍🐽

Piglets are wonderful, magical little creatures, especially when they are breathing gently as they sleep, completely comfortable and safe.

Many of our pig residents have shared my space while they grow, heal and learn to trust. They are all different, but one thing they seem to have in common is that they are ridiculously cuddly babies who somehow forget they are supposed to stop being babies when they become enormous pigs. 😂

Juniper is one of our more demanding piglet children.

Once she has had a lovely sleep, my alarm clock is not a phone.

It is a tiny pig nose (not so) gently nudging my head.

If that doesn't work, and I have the audacity to pull the blankets up and hide, she climbs directly onto my head and settles in.

Then comes the gentle squealing.

"Excuse me."

"Are you awake?"

"Because I NEEEEED breakfast."

"GET. OUT. OF. BED."

Apparently, at Contented Pig Inn, sleep-ins are not optional.

They are simply a brief delay in breakfast service.

We'd like to say a big fat THANK YOU to Sarah!

All the way from Western Australia, Sarah spent a week with us and the pigs, and helped out with some of the jobs that tend to get put to the side over and over. We enjoyed having her here very much and think she left with a little more knowledge about pigs. Like me, she has a special spot in her heart for these beautiful, wonderful animals.

There were lots of pats and cuddles along the way of course, which is most important!
