BEFORE & AFTER // Carefully restored by experienced heritage conservation professionals, the original structure that was once home to bakers on High Street in Tenterfield, NSW, was safely propped, straightened and reset, while maintaining as much of the original fabric as possible.

A big thank you to our heritage team, the TNMAI committee (including Bob Perry of Architecture & Place, Robert Sanderson of Resolution Architecture Pty Ltd, and Deniece Hawkins of MAWD), Tony Hickey Licenced Builder, Butler Plumbing, Eric Harmer Painting, and DBS Joinery for all their hard work.

We'll post more details of the project soon.

🧐🎨 It has come to our attention that the recent reveal of our paint colour selection for the Premier Shop building on Rouse Street has sparked much curiosity.

We would like to provide more insight and context to help others outside our project team to better understand our decision-making processes and research involved in such considerations.

The paint colour selection for our heritage precinct restoration project sites is based on primary evidence found on site and secondary evidence based on our team's combined 140 years of architectural research and experience.

These selections are also governed by a heritage paint colour palette in consultation with a Heritage Advisor.

The character of federation architecture in Australia developed rapidly during the period in which this building was built. The bold, expressive, and enchanting colours used were due to a resurgence in the popularity of Ancient Greek and Roman Architecture styles.

The architecture and colours used in early 1900s Australian buildings were not only influenced by European styles but were also heavily influenced by the other colonies of the British Empire, including India, Burma, Malaya, and Hong Kong.

When we look closely at elements like motifs and decoration, we see the collective knowledge and influences of these countries on the Australian Federation style.

🧐 The devil is in the detail. The shopfronts at the old bakery site on High Street look simple and elegant, but getting the 150-year-old building plumb to fit the reconstructed shopfronts is a highly skilled job... Fine details, such as applying rounded mullions on the glass frames to cast a shadow that makes the timber look thinner than it is, have been carefully considered and applied.

πŸ–Œ Following a facelift with its beautiful paint job, the Premier Shop on Rouse Street will be nearing completion! When the painting is complete, the final step will be hand-painted signboards.

🧐 You may have noticed that a brand-new business has just set up shop within the building πŸ‘ Our project has been made possible through Government grant funding which targets projects that stimulate local community spending and provide a long-lasting benefit to their community.

It is our intention that the restoration of the shopfront facades of these historically significant and important buildings in Tenterfield will continue to positively impact local business, our community and tourism.

πŸ–Œ Painting of the cast iron elements at the Premier Shop and National Buildings on Rouse Street has commenced! This is a six-part process and our very patient plasterer, Chris, is doing a great job of bringing the structures to life with a touch of colour.

EXCITING NEWS! The new shopfronts for the bakery building on High Street have arrived!

After being beautifully reconstructed by Darren at DBS Joinery, these are now ready for Eric Harmer to prime, before Tony Hickey & his team get ready to put it all together. GO TEAM! πŸ’ͺ

Remnants of original shopfronts that were used as templates for the reconstruction have been carefully stored for historic reference.

Works at the Federal Bakery building are coming along nicely with continued significant progress being made, including the completion of the east wall in mid-November and the roof at the beginning of December.

Since the existing shopfronts were removed for restoration works at the DSB Joinery workshop, Tony Hickey Licenced Builder and his team have been busy replacing the deteriorated structural jambs to the shopfronts.

The remaining works include the verandah construction and fabrication and installation of the shopfront windows and doors.

It's all happening! We're excited to announce that we've commenced project works at the National Buildings, which were originally built in 1914.

πŸ™Œ Of all our current project sites, this group of buildings presents the best example of historical architecture, with an interesting facade and prominence in terms of its street location on the corner of Rouse Street and High Street.

Inside, the pressed metal ceiling is still intact in three of the four bays (one was reconstructed to form an attic).

πŸ“· Thank you to Rouse HighSt for sharing this black & white postcard image. Historical photos provide our architects with valuable insights throughout the research, planning and reconstruction phases.

Works at 242 Rouse Street are nearing completion!

Following the off-site fabrication of elements in the BJS Constructions workshop and the colour scheme approval by Tenterfield Shire Council in mid-December (see first image here showing drawing of paint colours and signage by our Architectural Team Leader, Deniece Hawkins), the site has been a hive of activity in recent months to complete the framework installation and facade repainting.

More photos coming soon!

Out with the new and in with the old!

Some progress photos of the Premier Shop building in the process of matching the paint colours we found beneath the layers with those that correspond with paints used in the early 1900s.

More progress updates for this site coming soon!
