Huge day in Punmu today! ❤️🏜️

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming members of The Pilbara Regiment – Australian Army, Western Australia Police Force and Australian Border Force to Punmu.

It was a really valuable opportunity to sit down together, talk about Punmu and the Western Desert, share local knowledge and intelligence, and look at how we can all work together across such a huge and remote part of WA.

These relationships are incredibly important. There is no substitute for people actually coming out on Country, seeing the distances and conditions for themselves, meeting community and understanding how things work on the ground.

And thankfully it wasn’t all serious business 😂 — there was also time to kick the footy around with the kids and do some face painting, which made for a pretty special afternoon. 🏉🎨❤️

A huge thank you to everyone who made the trip out. We really appreciated the conversations, the sharing of knowledge, the laughs and the genuine interest in Punmu and our community.

You’re all very welcome back anytime.

Sometimes you just know when an old man needs to go home. 🤎

This week Nyari made it very clear that his heart was pulling him back to Parnngurr — his country, where he is from.

There has been a huge effort from family, community, the Punmu PAMS clinic and everyone around him to make that possible.

This morning Raylene set off with Nyari and Nola, their dogs packed in with them, heading home to Parnngurr.

Of course, Punmu Road decided it wasn’t going to make it quite that easy. A couple of hours out, four wheel studs broke and they were stranded. Luckily Raylene reached the one little patch of phone service on the road and called us.

We found the parts, and Gary — Nyari’s mate, who has quietly looked after Nyari and Nola with so much care — headed out with Anthony to get them going again.

When Gary and Anthony got there, Nyari and Nola had a fire going and two tails cooking.

When Gary returned to Punmu, he told me something that made the whole effort worthwhile:

He had never seen Nyari so happy. Truly happy.

A few nights ago, while the community was out looking for Nyari, Raylene and I were on country trying to find him. When my UTV couldn’t get over the dunes, Raylene’s son Curtis continued on, tracking Nyari through the bush.

I called over the UHF for the four-wheel drives to head towards us and lit some spinifex so they could see where we were.

I took this photo of that fire.

Looking at it, I could see what looked like wings, with one feather pointing off towards Parnngurr. I remember saying to Raylene, “Maybe old man is trying to go home.”

Today, he is.

There are times when caring for our old people isn’t about making them fit around systems or routines. It is about listening to them, listening to family and doing everything we can to help them be where their spirit is happiest.

Today that place is Parnngurr.

Safe travels Nyari and Nola. Enjoy being home. 🤎

🌼 Term 3 is underway at Rawa Community School! 🐛

Wanyjalpa? Kuul Karti (School time) We’re excited to welcome all our students and families back for a new term of learning, culture and community.

There is lots to look forward to this term, with visits from Fair Game Australia , Grand Trine Creative and Santa Maria College bringing new activities, opportunities and experiences for our students.

Out on Ngurra (Country), the bush foods are in abundance after the cooler weather, and the desert flowers are in bloom, making this a beautiful time of year across Punmu and Kunawarritji.

We can’t wait to see what Term 3 brings as we continue learning together through our Two-Way approach, combining strong cultural knowledge with classroom learning.
