We contributed 1000 kits.

We promised 20,000 kits. Together, you helped deliver an incredible 32,100! 💪🏽💪🏽

Over the past few weeks, thousands of Australians have rolled up their sleeves at schools, workplaces, community halls and kitchen tables to help make Mother’s May 2026 a month to remember.

✨ 53 Assembly Days
✨ 2261 volunteers
✨ 32,100 Clean Birth Kits

To every volunteer who gave up a Sunday morning, stayed back after work, packed kits on a chilly autumn night, donated, fundraised or helped spread the word – thank you!

Together, we move closer to a world where women and girls can give birth without fear of death, disease or infection. 🙏

From all of us at the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia – thank you for making Mother’s May count!

25 dedicated volunteers—including members from the Zonta Club Hunter Newcastle, Charlestown and Georgetown Girl Guides and Leaders, and members of the Newcastle Ionian Group —packed safe birth kits at the Georgetown Girl Guide Hall.
What's in a kit? A sheet of plastic, gauze, string, a blade, soap and gloves. Members of the Hawks Nest Bridge Club folded the plastic sheets and inserted them in bags earlier in the week. (The plastic bag and the plastic sheet are treated to be biodegradable.)

Together, we successfully assembled 1,000 birthing kits. These kits will be distributed to developing countries to support clean births for women in need.

It was a productive effort for a great cause.

Our birthing kit event was part of the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia’s 20,000 kits target to celebrate 20 years of providing kits for safe births for mothers and babies. For more information https://www.bkfa.org.au/

Kits are distributed via trusted local organisations. A local training component is usually included.

ZCHN recent delivered quilts made by the Quirky Quilters volunteers and a basket of bags full of toiletry items for distribution at a local women’s refuge.

The Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle gives support to seven refuges across the Lake Macquarie-Newcastle-Hunter region. Some of these facilities offer refuge to women (and their children) fleeing domestic violence and others offer homeless women a safe, if temporary, place to stay.

Club members are active in sourcing goods, then transporting and delivering them to where they're needed.

Quirky Quilters is one of the Club’s most active partners, providingcheerful, colourful quilts for women and families arriving at refuges with little or nothing. https://www.stlukesbelmont.com.au/community-programs/quirky-quilters/

The Club gladly accepts donations of those small toiletries provides in hotels and motels to put into these toiletry bags.

Zontians and friends met today to honour those who have been killed by Domestic Violence (DV). This was the third anniversary of laying a wreath at the Remembrance Bench on the Warner’s Bay Foreshore and reflecting on the impact of DV during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.

Recent statistics reveal that Australia-wide almost 40 percent of homicide offences were related to the horrific epidemic of DV. Other statistics indicate that 1 in 4 women are impacted by domestic violence during their lifetime.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month is held each May to raise community awareness of the social and personal impacts of domestic and family violence and the support available to those affected.

Locally, and internationally, Zonta acts to raise awareness of DV, family violence and coercive control. The Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle’s ZONTA SAYS NO TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Committee is doing much to educate Zontians, promote public awareness, and do further research in this field.
