Broomfield House and the Lanscroon Murals

Broomfield House, a beautiful 16th century building of historical interest located in Broomfield Park, Palmers Green, was badly damaged by fire some 20 years ago. Until its demise the House contained many decorative items from the 16th to 20th centuries. Some of the most notable historical features of the house (currently in storage) are the central carved balustrade staircase (1726), the wood-pan

elled hall and the Baroque murals painted by the Flemish artist Gerard Lanscroon in 1726. Lanscroon was one of the leading mural painters of English baroque in his time. He also worked on murals at Windsor Palace, Hampton Court, Powis Castle and at Arnos Grove. The Broomfield House Trust’s aim is to restore Broomfield House, and the murals (currently stored in pieces), so that it could be enjoyed as a heritage and learning centre, a place which schools can use to bring history alive, and a venue to display artworks and other collections. It would offer a café andmeeting rooms - serving as a much needed social hub in this beautiful park. The House could also serve as a focus for conferences and events and be fully accessible to local residents and visitors. We are trying to persuade Enfield Council to find a way of staging restoration work. Any ideas on how this significant target can be met would be welcome.
