Good News Power Basketball club’s origins date back to 2007, when a small group of parents of children attending Good News Lutheran College (GNLC) located in Tarneit on Melbourne’s outer west, identified a need for a structured sports activity outside the school-based programs. Led by Leanne Sammut, who was the club president and main driver since the team’s inception, the parents recruited primar

y school aged boys and girls from the school to form the Good News Power basketball club. Initially, four teams, Under 8's, Under 10 girls, Under 10 boys and Under 14 boys were entered in the junior competition conducted at the Werribee Basketball Association. In those early days, having enough regular players to support all teams each week was a major difficulty, but with persistence and the work of the dedicated parents, the club has grown to now comprise of 19 teams ranging from ‘Under 8s’ to ‘Under 16s’. The aim of the club is to develop the children’s basketball skills, and through basketball, develop life skills, all while working within the school's Christian ethos. While the children primarily came from the Good News Lutheran School, children from many other local schools are now also part of the club. The Good News Power basketball club provides a pathway for the children to continue their basketball development. The club in 2009 had one child go on to play representative basketball, with six children in 2010. We are proud to say five of these six children started with us as beginners. We are continually looking for new players and coaches to join our growing club. Any further information can be obtained by contacting us at [email protected]

CONGRATULATIONS ARIA LEONOR ❤️💚💙

At just 11 years old, Aria Leonor is already making a name for herself on and off the basketball court.

The talented young basketballer has been offered a coveted scholarship position at Maribyrnong Sports Academy for Year 7 in 2027, securing one of only 75 scholarship places available across the academy's specialist sports programs.

Aria currently plays representative basketball for Wyndham Basketball Association's 12.1 Girls team at Victorian Championship (VC) level. As a player competing against older athletes, she has continued to impress with her determination, work ethic and love for the game.

Her basketball journey began at Power Basketball Club, where she has played since her junior years and developed a strong foundation in the sport. Through countless training sessions, games and tournaments, Aria's passion for basketball has continued to grow, helping her progress to the representative level with Wyndham.

For Aria and her family, the scholarship offer was an emotional moment and recognition of years of dedication and sacrifice.

"Basketball has always been more than a sport for Aria. It has taught her resilience, teamwork and confidence. To see her rewarded with this opportunity is incredibly special."

The scholarship at Maribyrnong Sports Academy will allow Aria to combine her education with elite sporting development, providing access to high level coaching and pathways to further her basketball ambitions.

Despite her young age, Aria has already shown what can be achieved through hard work, commitment and a willingness to chase big dreams.

As she prepares for the next chapter of her journey, Aria remains focused on representing both Wyndham Basketball and Power Basketball Club with pride.

With a bright future ahead, this scholarship is just the beginning for one of Wyndham's promising young basketball talents.

Join us in congratulating Aria, Power Family! 💙
