Every Irish townland has a story and often, the name itself is the first clue to finding it. 🕵️

The meaning behind a prefix like Bally, Kil, or Dún can tell you what once stood there, a church, a fort, or a meadow giving you insight into the kind of place your ancestors called home.

In Griffith’s Valuation (1847–1864), families are listed by townland and civil parish, so even small details in a name can help you locate where your ancestors lived.

These linguistic clues connect the dots between past and present, guiding you back to the same fields, ridges, and valleys your family once walked. ☘️

Join us on Friday 17 October for a full-day seminar on Irish immigration records featuring talks by renowned expert historians and genealogists Dr Richard Reid, Dr Perry McIntyre and Dr Damian John Gleeson.

The talks will focus on different government immigration schemes and the large paper trail of official documents left behind. This includes not only the ships’ lists, but also thousands of other records that provide a picture of how the schemes were set up and experienced.

On the day you'll have the chance to view original state archives material and enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the Western Sydney Records Centre.

Many Scottish families - but not all! - followed a traditional naming pattern, well into the 19th century at least.

Knowing about the pattern won’t always help you to identify entries you’re looking for, but it can still be very helpful, particularly with older records.

On Saturday 16 August we had a morning tea at Taree Library for the 40th anniversary of our Society. It was a good morning. It was great to have a few of past presidents & early members for the Society, including one of the people who originally posted an article in the local papers that led to the formation of our Society.

Several library staff also attended along with MidCoast Mayor Claire Pontin & author & one of our patrons John Heath.
