Our President Eddie Wood and Vice President Tom McDonald were both honoured in Parliament in the NSW Legislative Assembly by our local Member Mrs Tanya Thompson who read out a Community Recognition Statement acknowledging their combined 80 years service to health care delivery and advocacy for patient care, well being of front line workers and keeping regional health needs firmly on the agenda.

It is high time that this area was given the attention it deserves by those in power in regards to health care delivery.

There is a total lack of will and committment from HNEH and NSW Health Department to improve health care service delivery in this area.

All that we are receiving are false promises and “Yes Minister” answers.

This inaction is totally unacceptable! They are treating our community with total disrespect. Obviously 12005 signatures on a petition and a unamious vote in the Legislative Assembly for Stage 2 and 3 to be completed in their entirety means nothing.

We shall discuss with our committee what further actions we can take. We shall continue to fight strongly through every avenue available to obtain the health service we deserve.

We commend Alison Penfold for standing up for our area and pushing for an UCC in Taree and better health care delivery for our area. The UCC would help alleviate the pressure on the Emergency Department at Manning Base Hospital which is bursting at the seams. This area needs an UCC in both Forster and Taree. It has been predicted that an UCC in Forster (as per the existing Clinical Services Plan) would accomodate 5000 - 6000 presentations per year, and it would be a similar number if there was an UCC in Taree. This would enable the community with non life threatening or non urgent conditions to be seen in a timely manner whilst lightening the load on Manning Base Hospital’s staff and Emergency Department.
It is great to see both our Federal and State Members of Parliament fighting for the health care needs of our area.
We shall also continue to fight for improvements to health care delivery in this area until Stages 2 and 3 of the Manning Redevelopment are completed in their entirety (not the watered down version) and UCC’s are delivered in both Forster and Taree.

We commend Tanya Thompson for putting this motion forward once again highlighting the dire straits that our hospital and community are in.
Our Health Action Group has highlighted the problems and short comings over the last 10 years and there is a lack of will being shown by HNE Health and the Health Department to improve conditions in this area. We will continue to fight for Stage 2 of the Redevelopment to be finished in its entirety as originally planned and promised followed immediately by Stage 3. This community deserves better than a watered down project.

Staff are working under increasing pressure and reaching breaking point. They are doing an amazing job despite working in difficult circumstances. Staff can’t be expected to keep this up without being supported by appropriate infrastructure and staffing levels.

On Monday evening we were invited to attend a presentation by Dr Berenika Turchin Director of Emergency Department, Manning Base Hospital hosted by Taree Rotary. Dr Turchin was talking about updates and partnerships in the Emergency Department. Thank you for the invitation, making us feel so welcome, updates and the opportunity to discuss the redevelopment and what the Health Action Group has been doing.
