The Museum and Grounds

In January 1853 an acre of ground granted to James Macarthur by the crown was given to Mr. Denning for the purpose of building a Weslyen Church. W Curnow (Goulburn) together with Rev. R.V.Danne (Crookwell). It was used on and off for many years by congregations of the Wesleyans and later Methodists for their services and finally closed in the 1950’s. Several local people, i

nterested in preserving the history of the village formed the Taralga Historical society, this group approached the Uniting Church N.S.W. Synod, with which the Methodist Church had amalgamated and they were able to obtain the old church as their headquarters in 1972. The museum is open Saturdays from 10am to 2pm and is staffed by volunteers. The entry fee is $5 per adult, children are free. Enquiries from individuals, small and large groups, car clubs etc are welcome and the museum can be opened to meet their needs.

🌿 Working Bee – Wednesday 4th March at 10am 🌿

The Taralga Historical Society is holding a Working Bee on Wednesday 4th March, starting at 10am, and we would love to see as many helpers as possible!

There’s plenty to do as we freshen up the grounds and buildings:

🏡 Cordingley Cottage – trimming the buddleja at the front and the cotoneaster at the back
🚐 Womby Van – trimming the h**e
⛪ Church pots – removing dead plants ready to replant with lavender
🏫 School fence garden bed – picking up branches and bark, plus weeding
🛣 Street frontage – raking and cleaning out the gutters
🔧 Stevenson Shed – collecting and removing leftover metal
Blay Dairy renovation

Many hands make light work, and it’s always a productive and enjoyable morning together. If you can spare a couple of hours, please bring gloves, hats, and any handy garden tools.

We look forward to seeing you there! 🌻

🏛 Blay Dairy Refurbishment Underway – Thank You AMPYR!

The Taralga Historical Society is thrilled to share that our Blay Dairy refurbishment project is moving ahead thanks to a $5,723 grant from the AMPYR Community Benefit Fund – Swallow Tail Grant. We sincerely thank AMPYR for their generous support and commitment to strengthening regional communities.

The Blay Dairy is a much-loved reminder of Taralga’s rich dairying past, when 168 local farms formed the heart of our district. The building houses a wonderful collection of tools, photographs and memorabilia that tell the stories of the families who built this industry. The new works – including a reinforced floor, improved lighting, new shelving and display case, and updated labelling – will protect this collection and present it to a professional standard for years to come.

We’re especially excited that the refurbished Blay Dairy will be a showcase exhibit at this year’s October Long Weekend Open Day, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to see the transformation.

Thank you again to AMPYR and to our hardworking volunteers for helping keep Taralga’s stories alive for future generations.

Members of the Taralga Historical Society were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Max Wright. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Glennis and her family at this time.

As one of our founding members, Max gave over 50 years of service to the Society, and we owe him a great debt of gratitude. From the stonework on the chimney of Cordingley Cottage, to overseeing the acquisition of artefacts from the Strathalbyn property, to generously assisting with countless historical inquiries, Max’s contributions have left a lasting legacy.

We will fondly remember his sense of humour, his curiosity, and his forthright yet gentlemanly character. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
