Every time an Aboriginal child dies, the response is calls for more removals — never more support for families.

But the data tells a different story. Aboriginal children are already removed at devastating rates, with over 25,000 children taken from their families — now surpassing the numbers of the Stolen Generations.

Most removals are for “neglect,” which is deeply linked to poverty and lack of support, not culture. Meanwhile, Indigenous child removals have risen 120% in 10 years while non-Indigenous removals have decreased.

This is not about protecting children better. It’s about a system failing Aboriginal families while repeating the same cycle of trauma, loss, and disconnection.

Child abuse is a human issue — not a cultural one. Families need support, housing, healing, advocates, and culturally safe services. Not more trauma.

We cannot keep repeating history and expect different outcomes.
