Youโ€™re not hoarding itโ€™s a cultural practice.

Youโ€™re not hoarding itโ€™s a cultural practice.

You wouldnโ€™t get it

The Japanese word tsundoku refers to the habit of acquiring books and letting them pile up without immediately reading them. The term dates back to Japanโ€™s Meiji period (late 19th century) and combines the words tsunde okuโ€”meaning โ€œto pile things up and leave themโ€โ€”and doku, meaning โ€œto read.โ€ Over time it became a light-hearted way to describe book lovers who keep buying books faster than they can finish them.

Rather than implying laziness, tsundoku often reflects a cultural appreciation for books and knowledge. Many readers enjoy surrounding themselves with unread titles as a form of intellectual curiosity, keeping future reading possibilities within reach. The idea has gained popularity online in recent years as people recognize the familiar experience of building a personal library that grows faster than it can be read.
