Meet Soeun Sreymeas, a student supported by 🎓 Lotus Outreach Australia's GATE Phnom Penh secondary school project and Lotus Outreach International's 🍚 Rice for Education project.

Soeun Sreymeas, 18, is a Grade 11 student in Phnom Penh. After losing her mother and with her father no longer present, she now lives with her grandmother, brothers, and aunt. Her family survives on a small daily income from selling fried banana cakes and irregular construction work.

At one point, Sreymeas considered leaving school to help support her family.

In 2024, she was selected for a GATE scholarship supported by Lotus Outreach Australia, alongside rice support through Lotus Outreach International’s Rice for Education project. Through this combined support, she receives school supplies, a stipend, and 50 kg of rice each month.

This support has eased the financial pressure on her family and ensured consistent access to food—allowing her to remain in school and focus on her studies.

She now hopes to become a teacher and study at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.

“This support gave me hope. It allowed me to continue my education and dream about my future.”

On World Health Day, we are reminded that health is not just about medicine — it’s about access, safety, and the chance to keep learning.

This is Sreykeo. She needed urgent surgery for a growth that was restricting her breathing and sending her to hospital twice a month. To pay for the operation, her mother borrowed $300 using her motorbike as collateral, and another $300 from neighbours and friends.

Without support, this family would have fallen into irreversible debt.

Through her Lotus Outreach Australia scholarship, Sreykeo’s family was able to repay every loan — and focus on her recovery, not financial ruin. Today, she is thriving at school, healthy again, and has even won multiple medals in a mathematics competition.

This is why health support matters.

When girls receive both education and emergency health care, they don’t just survive — they recover, grow, and succeed.

Clean water is something most of us take for granted — but for many Cambodian families, it’s a daily struggle.

Some of our students’ families rely on rainwater tanks, and in the dry season they pay around $11 per week to have water trucked to their homes. That might not seem like a lot — but it often means no money left for eggs, rice, or other essentials. And if they can’t pay, they go without water entirely.

Storing water comes with its own risks, too — mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue, and typhoid in some areas.

On World Water Day, we reflect on how vital safe, reliable water is for health, education, and independence — and why supporting families and communities matters.
