Wyanga extends our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, Redfern, Cowra and broader community on the passing of two extraordinary Redfern leaders, Dr Naomi Mayers and Aunty Ann Weldon.

This is a profound and heavy loss for community. The absence of two such powerful women is deeply felt — a stark reminder of how much they carried, gave, and fought for.

From the Wyanga Board, staff, and Elders, we offer our heartfelt condolences and stand alongside all who are grieving. Our deepest condolences to both families.
Their legacies will endure. 🖤

“Wyanga wish to pay our condolences on the recent passing of our dear friend Mary Lou Buck from Kempsey. Mary Lou lived in the Sydney inner city area for many years working at Murawina Aboriginal pre-school before she moved permanently back home to Kempsey. Mary Lou worked for many years and was successful in achieving the first Native Title on mainland Australia. She also was a lifetime member of the AECG.
Mary-Lou will be sadly missed and we give our condolences to her family and my personal dear friend and sister.”

What can you do this Survival Day?
Pause. Reflect. Give back.

Our Elders carried culture, community, families and strength through survival - for everybody including allies. Honouring them today means supporting in real and practical ways.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to mark 26 January, consider donating to support Wyanga Elders and the care, connection and dignity they deserve — today and every day.

On behalf of Wyanga Aboriginal Aged Care, I pay my deepest respects on the passing of The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO — a remarkable woman whose life was dedicated to service, compassion and justice.

Dame Marie shared a long and meaningful connection with all Wyanga Elders especially our founder, Aunty Sylvia Scott, grounded in mutual respect, advocacy and a deep commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal people. Her connection to Wiradjuri Country, through Narrandera, was something she spoke of with pride, and it informed the respect and understanding she carried into her work across health, education and community.

Wyanga was privileged to share a longstanding relationship with Dame Marie. Her leadership as a psychiatrist, academic, health advocate and former Governor of New South Wales was marked by unwavering humanity. She championed mental health, women’s leadership, social equity and Aboriginal health long before these conversations were mainstream, and she did so with grace, courage and integrity.

Dame Marie’s passing is deeply felt by our community. She leaves behind a legacy of profound impact, kindness and tireless service that will continue to guide and inspire generations to come.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones and all those whose lives were touched by her extraordinary work.

Vale Dame Marie Bashir.
You will be remembered with respect, gratitude and love.

At Wyanga, we are proud to share that our vision is becoming a reality – a residential aged care home for our Elders in Redfern, where we can age on Country, connected to family, community, and culture.

With the support of our partner , we are taking the next step to make this dream real – building a future where culture and care walk hand in hand.

For us, this is more than bricks and mortar. It is about dignity, culture, identity, and being surrounded by care that honours who we are.

✨ BIG NEWS ✨
After months of stress and uncertainty, we’re beyond excited to share that we’ve raised the funds to FIX OUR ROOF! 🎉🙌

Yesterday we made the special announcement to our Elders over a beautiful lunch cooked with love by Sione, Lesley and Aunty Beryl. ❤️ What a joy to finally give our Aunties and Uncles this wonderful news.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported, donated, and stood with us on this journey. This wouldn’t have been possible without you. 🌸

✨ While our building might still be in crisis, this week brought a proud moment for all of us at Wyanga.

Our incredible Founding Director and respected Elder, Aunty Millie Ingram, was officially inducted as a Member of the Order of Australia by Her Excellency Margaret Beazley .

Aunty Millie received this honour in recognition of her lifelong service and unwavering dedication to Aboriginal communities.

She was joined at Government House by Chairperson Aunty Norma Ingram, CEO Jarin Baigent, and her great-granddaughter Nalani Spencer — three generations standing strong. 🖤💛❤️

Join us in congratulating Aunty Millie.

Over the past 2 days our Chairperson Aunty Norma Ingram and CEO Jarin Ingram Baigent delivered discussions at First Nations Women Leadership and Legacy conference.
Both spoke about the importance of Wyanga and support for ACCO’s in community.
It was a joy to hear about the strong Aboriginal female leadership across so many other spaces.

❤️❤️A HUGE THANK YOU!!! To everyone who has supported us so far. We aren’t quite there yet and still need to raise funds for the roof repairs.
Every little bit helps, and so does a like or share. ❤️❤️

🔴 We still need to raise funds to restore Wyanga. 🔴
Storm damage has left key areas of our building unusable — spaces the Elders rely on for care, connection, and community.

🔴🚨 URGENT: OUR ELDERS NEED YOUR HELP 🚨🔴

Wyanga is more than just a building.
It’s a home. A lifeline.
A place our Elders rely on for care, connection, and community.
But recent heavy rain and storms, the roof has been severely damaged - forcing us to shut down our building and move our Elders’ programs offsite.

We’re urgently seeking support to repair the roof and bring our Elders back home. The damage is severe, the costs are overwhelming, and we simply can’t manage it without your help.
