Project HoPe

Project HoPe Official page for Southern Cross Veterinary Clinic's charitable arm - Project HoPe (Homeless Pets). Project HoPe fits this important niche.

Project HoPe (Homeless Pets) is Southern Cross Veterinary Clinic's charitable arm. Our vision is to vaccinate every homeless pet and provide access to veterinary services among this often-forgotten part of our community. Animals don’t discriminate between rich and poor, healthy and unhealthy and for this reason, they should have equal access to veterinary care and services. As pet owners we have a

very deep bond with our four legged family, and the bond between the homeless and their furry companions is potentially stronger. They spend every minute of their lives with their pets, sharing all of their resources. Through the past year of working closely with the homeless population of Sydney, we’ve seen first-hand that these companions are essential to the wellbeing and indeed the survival of their owners. They provide a source of stability for the people who have no secure shelter, no guaranteed source of food and limited possessions. Most animal care related charities provide adoption services and very few provide for the ongoing care of animals. We’ve expanded Project HoPe to provide crisis accommodation at our clinic for pets of people who are looking for shelter as well as pop-up clinics to increase the regular checkups of underprivileged pets. We’ve constructed kennels at the well-known Jewish House in Bondi, to make what is Sydney’s first pet-friendly crisis centre and there has since been an influx of people escaping domestic violence situations with their pets, who would otherwise not leave such relationships for fear of being separated from their pet. Project HoPe needs your support, so please consider donating funds or time. We welcome you to our fundraising evening at the Courthouse Hotel on Australia St in Newtown this coming Monday 17th November from 6pm where there will be face-painting, a photo booth and plenty of raffle prizes.

For someone experiencing homelessness, a pet is often so much more than a pet. They are family, a source of comfort and sometimes the one constant through life's toughest moments.

Meet Wally. 🧡

Wally recently visited one of our Project HoPe pop-up clinics at Mission Australia Housing in Camperdown, where our volunteer veterinary team provided him with the care he needed, completely free of charge.

Mission Australia Housing provides safe and stable accommodation for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Through our partnership, Project HoPe (Homeless Pets) visits the Camperdown site regularly to ensure their beloved companion animals receive the veterinary care they deserve, regardless of their owner's circumstances.

Since 2013, Project HoPe has been working to protect one of life's most important bonds: the bond between people experiencing homelessness or escaping domestic violence and the pets who stand beside them through it all.

Every consultation, surgery, vaccination and health check is only possible because of the generosity of our community.

If Wally's story has touched your heart, please consider making a donation. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us continue providing free veterinary care to pets whose families need it most.

Simba's owner is experiencing homelessness, but that never changed how much he loved his best friend.

When Simba needed complex knee surgery, Project HoPe stepped in. Thanks to your support, Simba received the treatment he needed and is now on the road to recovery. 🧡

Together, we're helping protect the bond between people and the pets who mean the world to them.

Earlier this week, our team came together for a Project HoPe pop-up clinic at Mission Australia 🧡
Dr Sam, Nurse Maria, our Practice Manager Clare and Aya from Zoetis were on site providing free veterinary care to the pets of Sydney’s rough sleepers. From health checks and vaccinations to dental consults, nail clips and gentle reassurance, every pet was treated with care, dignity and respect.
For many of the people we met, their pet is their family, their comfort and often their reason to keep going. Being able to support both pet and person in moments like these is at the heart of why Project HoPe exists.
Project HoPe is the charitable arm of Southern Cross Vet, and pop-up clinics like this are only possible through community support. If you’d like to help us reach more pets in need, please consider donating via the link in our bio or head to https://projecthope.org.au/donate-now/
We’ll be sharing more photos, videos, stories and case studies from this pop-up clinic over the coming days, so keep following along to stay informed 🐾

Hades came to us through Project HoPe with severe dental disease that was causing him a lot of pain and making it difficult to eat 🧡🐾

Because his owner is currently going through tough financial circumstances, treatment would not have been possible without the support of Project HoPe. Thanks to Project HoPe, we were able to perform the dental surgery he needed so he can now live comfortably and eat without pain.

Project HoPe helps pets belonging to people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence or financial hardship receive essential veterinary care while protecting the powerful bond they share with their companion animals.

If you believe in what we do, please consider supporting Project HoPe. Donate through the link in bio and help us care for more pets like Hades.

Cheddar came to us through Project HoPe with severe dental disease and a painful eye condition. 🧡

After receiving the treatment he needed, he was feeling much more comfortable and enjoying plenty of cuddles along the way.

Every donation helps us continue caring for pets like Cheddar and protecting the bond they share with their humans. Donate via the link in bio.

Last week, our Project HoPe team provided free veterinary care to the pets of people experiencing homelessness and domestic violence at Mission Australia Housing 🧡🐾

For many rough sleepers, these pets are more than companions. They are family, emotional support, and often the reason they keep fighting through incredibly difficult circumstances.

Through Project HoPe, we provide free health checks, vaccinations, medications, nail clips, dental checks, and more to help protect this incredibly special bond.

If you’d like to support our work, please consider donating via the link in bio 🧡 Every donation genuinely helps.

Our next Project HoPe Pop-up Clinic is coming up on Monday, 11 May 🧡

On the day, our team will be providing free veterinary care to the pets of people experiencing homelessness and domestic violence across Sydney. This includes free health checks, dental checks, vaccinations, microchipping, nail clips, medications, and more.

We are also currently accepting donations to help support the pets and owners who come to us for care. Pet food, blankets, pet clothing, toys, leads, bedding, and other pet essentials are all incredibly appreciated.

Protecting the bond between vulnerable people and their companion animals is something we care deeply about. For many rough sleepers, their pets are their family, their emotional support, and often the reason they keep going through incredibly difficult circumstances. It’s a bond built on unconditional love, loyalty, and survival, and one we believe deserves protection and compassion.

If you would like to help, you can donate now by heading to http://www.projecthope.org.au, by scanning the QR code in the image, or by dropping donations into any Southern Cross Vet clinic at St Peters, Surry Hills, or Bellevue Hill. Just send us a DM beforehand to coordinate your donations.

Even a small $5 donation can go a long way in helping us care for pets in need.

If you would like to organise a donation drop-off, please feel free to send us a DM. We truly appreciate every bit of support. 🐾
