Meet Clare Johnston, a disabled-identifying composer, performer, and music technologist from Edinburgh, Scotland, who is exploring new possibilities for musical expression through technology! 💙🎶

Clare grew up playing viola and recorder in the youth music sector, but she encountered barriers when trying to progress to the next level of music education. After exploring different career paths, she returned to her first love — music and music education — in 2009.

Her work with Drake Music Scotland introduced her to music technology and the creative possibilities of iPad apps. She discovered new ways to create high-quality performances that express a distinctly Disabled voice. 🎼📱

Clare's compositions bring together traditional and digital instruments in innovative ways, including:

🎵 Solo a Trois — a solo iPad composition featuring three voices.

🎵 Bouncing Harps — a duet combining digital and acoustic harp.

🎵 Contemplation and Review — a composition for a remote MIDI ensemble featuring iPad, Akai EWI, MIDI violin, synthesizer, and MiMu musical gloves.

Clare believes digital instruments deserve their own unique musical voices and compositions designed around their individual characteristics. Her work explores both the differences and similarities between acoustic and digital instruments, highlighting the strengths of each.

She is also interested in eye-gaze-controlled music technology, drawing on her own experience of using eye-gaze technology at times. This personal connection helps inform her interest in developing more accessible ways for people to create music. 🌍✨

Clare's journey is a reminder that musical creativity can extend far beyond traditional instruments and methods. By combining technology, composition, and lived experience, she is helping explore new possibilities for who can make music — and how that music can sound.

🥁 CAN-DO MUSOS GLOBAL FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: REMONT POMP 🇵🇱

Meet Remont Pomp, an incredible inclusive band from Gdansk, Poland, bringing musicians with and without disabilities together through improvisation, experimentation, and a shared love of sound. 🎶

Founded in 2004 by the Polish Association for the Mentally Handicapped Circle in Gdansk, the band was created by Jarek Marciszewski to connect people with different sensitivities and forms of expression.

Remont Pomp takes inspiration from African music, avant-garde music, and free jazz, but what makes them truly unique is the way they create their instruments.

🥁 Plates, bowls, bottles, and everyday objects

Their exploration of these unusual sounds led to what they call “Trash Music” — turning ordinary objects into extraordinary instruments.

The band's music is authentic, unpredictable, and highly improvisational. Every member brings their own personality and expression to the music.

A major turning point came in 2011, when Remont Pomp collaborated with acclaimed Polish musician Mikołaj Trzaska. Their work eventually led to the recording of “Golden Platina”, featuring Australian bassist Mike Majkowski and blending ethnic music, avant-garde, and free jazz influences. 🎷

Over the years, Remont Pomp has also welcomed volunteers and musicians from Europe and Asia, bringing even more cultural diversity to their sound.

🌍 Can-Do Musos Featured Country of the Month: Sweden 🇸🇪

This month, we’re heading to Sweden to celebrate three incredible members of the Can-Do Musos Global Family — Eddie Wheeler, Jesper Odelberg, and Olle Frodin.

🎸 Eddie Wheeler — Göteborg, Sweden
Challenge: Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Eddie Wheeler is a Swedish rockstar who has taken his music around the world. He has performed more than 200 gigs and toured countries including the USA, England, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden, and France.

Eddie’s musical influences come from legendary punk and rock bands including MC5, The Stooges, Ramones, The Damned, and Television.

Many people also recognize Eddie from the Swedish television show Raggadish, which followed him during an international tour in 2006.

Beyond performing, Eddie is also a frequent speaker at schools, conferences, and other events, using his experiences to connect with audiences both on and off the stage.

🎤 Jesper Odelberg — Göteborg, Sweden
Challenge: Cerebral Palsy

Jesper Odelberg has built a remarkable career as a stand-up comedian, lecturer, debater, actor, musician, and performer.

Born in 1970, Jesper became well known throughout Sweden, with his major breakthrough coming in 1997 on the television show Släng dig i brunnen. As a wheelchair-using performer, he has spent his career challenging assumptions and confronting society’s prejudices surrounding disability and wheelchairs — often using humor and his own experiences to do it.

Music has also played a major role in Jesper’s career. He toured as a folksinger with pianist Thomas Darelid, recorded his self-titled 1999 album interpreting classical Swedish folk songs, and later performed with Boys on Wheels and the Bohuslän Big Band.

Jesper eventually began writing his own music and formed the Jesper Odelberg Band, combining his original songs, interpretations of other artists’ work, true stories, stand-up, and plenty of humor into one unique stage experience.

🥁 Olle Frodin — Sala, Sweden
Challenge: Arm Amputee

Olle Frodin’s love of music began when he was just 10 years old after discovering albums by Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. He knew he wanted to play drums, and after starting with a single snare drum, he eventually received his first full drum kit at Christmas in 1982.

He went on to play in local rock and hard rock bands, simply because he loved playing and having fun.

Then, in March 2002, everything changed.

Olle was rushed to the hospital with severe pain and illness caused by a serious flesh-eating bacterial infection. Within 24 hours, his right arm had been amputated.

But his story didn't end there.

Encouraged by his bandmates, Olle returned to the drums and began experimenting with electronic kits, pedals, and new techniques. When playing became frustrating and he eventually stepped away from music for several years, he worried that he would never be able to play the way he once had.

In 2009, Olle returned to acoustic drums and began rebuilding his setup around what worked for him.

Years of experimentation led him to develop a highly customized drum kit and playing technique, allowing him to continue doing what he loves — just in a different way.

And his message says it all:

“If you really WANT to do it, you CAN do it!! Never give up the things you love!”

🎹 CAN-DO MUSOS GLOBAL FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: MARA KELLAND 🇳🇿

Meet Kelland, a talented pianist, singer, harpist, music teacher, and performer from Auckland, New Zealand.

Born fifteen weeks prematurely, Mara was left almost totally blind. But music became an important part of her life from an early age. At just seven years old, she began studying piano through the Suzuki Method, beginning a lifelong musical journey. 🎶

By the age of 12, Mara had begun singing seriously and became involved in choirs throughout high school. Then, in 2006, she took on a new musical challenge — teaching herself to play the Irish harp. 🪕✨

Mara has continued to expand her musical knowledge throughout her life. She has earned grades in piano and music theory through both the Australian Music Examiners Board (AMEB) and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

She is also a licensed Simply Music Piano and Musicopolis Play A Story teacher, sharing her knowledge and love of music with the next generation of musicians.

Mara teaches piano from her home studio in Mount Wellington, Auckland, combining her passion for music with her dedication to helping others discover their own musical abilities.

But teaching isn't the only way Mara shares her music with her community. ❤️

She regularly performs at retirement homes and at the older persons' mental health inpatient ward at her local hospital. She has also performed twice for Love Your Mountain Day and appeared in concerts with the Blind Low Vision Education Network NZ Music School.

Her performances provide more than music — they create opportunities for connection, enjoyment, and shared experiences.

Beyond music, Mara holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from AUT and a Certificate in Freelance Journalism from the New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. Throughout her education, she says that music remained her constant companion and her first love.

And when she's not teaching or performing, Mara keeps her creative side busy. She enjoys painting, photography, reading, playing the harp, and singing folk music. 📚🎨📷🎶

From learning piano as a young child to becoming a teacher, performer, pianist, singer, and self-taught harpist, Mara has continued to find new ways to express herself through the arts.

🥁 CAN-DO MUSOS GLOBAL FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: DANIEL SAHETAPY 🇳🇱

Meet Daniel Sahetapy, a talented drummer from Rotterdam, Netherlands, whose passion for drumming began when he was just 5 years old.

Daniel has been a wheelchair user all his life, but that never stopped him from pursuing his dream of becoming a drummer. In 1986, at just 6 years old, Daniel received his first drum set — beginning a musical journey that would continue for decades. 🎶🥁

In 1993, Daniel attended Werkenrode, where he met Remy Pothof. That same year, he experienced one of his first opportunities to perform on stage behind a drum kit, playing a Mapex drum set alongside Joep van Deursen.

Daniel continued developing his skills and, in 1998, began taking lessons from drummer Rene van Goch. That same year, Daniel had another memorable opportunity to play drums on stage — this time with Dutch pop singer Marco Borsato.

Then came 2000, a major turning point in Daniel's musical journey.

🎸 Daniel's own drum kit was born!

Daniel formed the Rotterdam band First A.I.D. with Arthur Scova and Iscar Boom. For 18 years, Daniel had played without a bass drum, but in August 2001, that changed — and so did his playing style.

Daniel began attending SKVR in South Rotterdam, where he received drum lessons from teacher Paul Jönsthövel. Learning to play wasn't always easy. Without a bass drum, Daniel had developed a different approach to drumming, and learning to play left-handed presented another challenge.

But Daniel kept going.

By the end of the 2001–2002 school year, he had made significant progress as a drummer and continued working to develop his technique and style.

In 2003, First A.I.D. gave its first performance. Two years later, Daniel celebrated his birthday by performing a drum solo for his relatives, friends, and acquaintances — all while continuing to focus on becoming a better drummer. 🥁🔥

Daniel's musical interests include Pop, Rock, and Reggae, and he regularly takes part in local jam sessions, continuing to perform, learn, and connect with other musicians.

His drumming heroes include Rani Ramadhany, Lux Drummerette, Meytal Cohen, Akira Jimbo, Pete Ray Biggins, Hans Eijkenaar, and Ton Dijkman.

Daniel's journey is a powerful example of what can happen when someone starts with a dream, faces challenges along the way, adapts, and keeps playing.

From receiving his first drum kit at age six to performing on stage, forming a band, developing his own approach to drumming, and continuing to play at local jam sessions, Daniel has spent decades proving that there is more than one way to find your rhythm. 🌎🥁

🎤 CAN-DO MUSOS GLOBAL FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: SABRINA MCKIERNAN 🇮🇪

Meet Sabrina McKiernan, a talented singer from Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, whose life has been filled with music for as long as she can remember.

Sabrina is totally blind, and she says the most important things in her life are her family, her faith, her good friends, and her Guide Dog Basil. 🐕❤️

But there has always been another constant in Sabrina's life: music.

Sabrina began singing at a very young age. Her father introduced her to Country Western music, while she also enjoyed listening to 80s pop music on the family record player. By the time she was seven or eight, she was already singing in front of audiences at family gatherings — and she has been hooked ever since! 🎶

Sabrina describes what happens when she sings beautifully:

“When I sing, it is my soul, my spirit. It's like a light inside me switches on.”

As she grew older, music became an even bigger part of her life. From school plays and family parties to weddings and choirs, Sabrina continued developing her voice. During her teenage years, while studying keyboard and voice at the Kerry School of Music, she truly caught the “musicians' bug.”

Over the years, Sabrina has performed with well-known artists including Frances Black and the late Christie Hennessy, served as a support act for Davy Arthur, performed with Tralee Musical Society, competed in local and national competitions, and used her voice to support community organizations such as the Red Cross.

And her musical range is impressive! 🎤

Sabrina performs across a variety of genres, including Irish Folk, Soul, Gospel, Popular, Classical, and Musical Theatre. Her versatility allows her to bring something different to every performance.

In 2010, Sabrina released her debut album, “I Can See Clearly Now,” with all proceeds going to Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind — combining her love of music with her desire to support an organization that is close to her heart. ❤️

Today, Sabrina particularly enjoys performing at weddings and church events, where her voice and love of music can help make special occasions even more meaningful.

And there is one message Sabrina wants people to understand:

She wants to be known as a singer who happens to be blind — not a blind singer.

That distinction speaks volumes about how Sabrina sees herself and her place in the music world. Her blindness is part of her story, but it does not define her talent, her passion, or the music she brings to an audience.

Sabrina says, “I love life,” and that joy comes through in everything she does. 🌟🎶

🎹 CAN-DO MUSOS GLOBAL FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: MEYSAM KHATAMINIA 🇮🇷

Meet Meysam Khataminia, an accomplished pianist, composer, arranger, conductor, choir and band leader, author, lecturer, and educator from Tehran, Iran.

Blind from an early age, Meysam discovered his extraordinary connection to music through his grandfather and uncle. He dedicated himself to learning music theory and developed his skills under the guidance of prominent Persian musicians and professors, including Mohammad Nouri, Javad Maroufi, Naser Cheshmazar, and Mahmoud Rezaei. 🎶

By just 19 years old, Meysam had earned the equivalent of a master's-level certificate in teaching piano and solfège. He went on to teach at cultural centers throughout Tehran and received certification to lead choirs through the Cultural-Artistic Organisation of Tehran Municipality.

In 2002, Meysam formed a choir made up of blind students at the Mehr Cultural Center at Tehran University, helping create new opportunities for blind musicians to develop their theoretical and practical knowledge of music.

Two years later, he founded the Afra Music ensemble, performing concerts in cities throughout Iran. Under his direction, the ensemble achieved remarkable success, taking first place three times in the Iranian national disability music group competition. 🏆

In 2009, Meysam founded and managed the Afra Music School under the supervision of Iran's Ministry of Culture and Guidance.

Today, the school serves approximately 500 students with more than 30 teachers, offering instruction in traditional, pop, and classical music. With recording studios, performance spaces, teaching rooms, and regular student concerts, the school has become an important center for musical education and development in eastern Tehran.

But Meysam's work extends far beyond music.

He has completed a PhD in Persian Language and Literature, holds a bachelor's degree in Arabic Language and Literature, and has pursued postdoctoral studies at Allameh Tabatabai University. He has worked with the University of Tehran and Allameh Tabatabai University in education, research, editing, and translation while also teaching Persian and Arabic literature.

And when he's not teaching? He's performing. 🎹🎼

Meysam has performed throughout Iran and the Middle East, as well as in countries including India, Nepal, and Singapore. He has performed as a soloist and band member and has collaborated with numerous well-known singers and musicians.

His musical roles are just as diverse. Meysam has worked as a composer, arranger, pianist, synthesizer player, melodica player, accordion player, and orchestra director and leader.

He has also performed with the multinational interdisciplinary blind fusion trio Mirage and has contributed piano performances to countless recordings and albums.

As an author and educator, Meysam has published numerous articles and written two Persian-language books covering music theory and piano instruction. He also regularly composes and arranges vocal and instrumental works, some of which can be heard through his YouTube channel.

From teaching hundreds of students to leading ensembles, composing music, performing internationally, and creating educational opportunities for blind musicians, Meysam has built a remarkable career centered around music, education, and leadership. 🌎🎶

🥁 CAN-DO MUSOS GLOBAL FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: PRATYUSH CHETTY 🇮🇳

Meet Pratyush Chetty (Drum Classes with Pratyush RockariZma), a worship drummer from Jeypore, India, whose love for rhythm started long before he ever imagined himself playing a drum set.

Pratyush says his mother remembers him constantly “hitting on utensils, boxes, tins, cans,” and he believes that through God’s grace, he was an inborn musician. 🎶

As a child, Pratyush spent eight years playing percussion instruments such as bongos and congas. Because of his physical disability, he never dreamed he would one day become a drummer. But life took an amazing turn, and he has now been playing drums for 10 years.

Today, Pratyush is primarily a worship drummer, serving as a church drummer and taking on the responsibility of providing music during worship. His musical influences span contemporary Christian, gospel, worship, rock, and metal.

One of Pratyush's biggest challenges has been access to equipment. He has never owned his own drum set because of financial limitations. Instead, he practices and performs on the drums available at his church — including an old, broken, off-brand kit that has already passed through several owners.

Despite these obstacles, Pratyush continues pushing himself forward. He teaches children, works on strengthening his fingers, hands, wrists, and feet, and continues learning every day. He is especially focused on improving his left-hand and left-foot techniques.

For Pratyush, getting behind the drums is where limitations seem to disappear. ❤️🥁

He says that audiences often don't realize he is physically challenged until after they hear him play. Their reaction and appreciation mean a great deal to him. When he performs, he says he lets his emotions out through the music — and on stage, it never feels like he is physically challenged.

His musical influences are wide-ranging, from Green Day and Lamb of God to legendary drummers such as Tre Cool and Chris Adler, as well as Indian drummers including Darshan Doshi, Ranjit Barot, Gino Banks, Shivamani, and many others.

He has also drawn inspiration from countless worship and gospel artists and drummers, including Hillsong United, Bethel Music, Jesus Culture, Chris Tomlin, Don Moen, Simon Kobler, and Duncan Phillips.

But above all, Pratyush's greatest inspiration is his faith. 🙏

He says, “I love to praise & worship through my drumming.”

Pratyush knows there are still goals he wants to achieve. He is working toward becoming faster and stronger, improving his technique, and one day being able to play the complex techniques that currently challenge him.

Most importantly, he refuses to stop learning.

“I've been pushing myself against all odds and trying to accomplish my drumming goals the way I want to play.”

🥁 CAN-DO MUSOS GLOBAL FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: ANGELO PENTARIS 🇬🇷

Meet Angelo Pentaris, a talented drummer from Athens, Greece, whose journey with cerebral palsy has become a powerful story of determination, music, and empowerment.

Angelo first connected with the drums during a difficult period when an injury left him in a wheelchair for two years. Unable to do many of the things he had once enjoyed, music became his driving force.

🥁 The drums gave Angelo something to fight for.

They inspired him to overcome the challenges in front of him and become the best version of himself — not only as a drummer, but as a person. Angelo ultimately decided to pursue music professionally, hoping that his own creative voice could empower others as well.

At just 17 years old, Angelo moved to Los Angeles to study music at the Los Angeles College of Music, where he became one of only three students from an original class of 15 to graduate.

Since then, Angelo has performed with bands and collaborated with artists across Greece, Poland, and the United States. He has also toured internationally, combining motivational speaking with live drum performances.

One of his most meaningful projects is “Reflection,” a five-part YouTube series featuring five original songs inspired by different stages of his life. Through the project, Angelo shares not only his music, but the stories and experiences behind it.

In 2022, Angelo took his message to the TEDxAthens stage, where he spoke about turning fear into faith. Later that same event, he performed drums alongside singer Danai Nielsen at the Greek National Opera.

🥁 Angelo has also performed at the Athens Drum Festival and currently hosts his Drum Up The Volume shows at venues throughout Athens.

Today, Angelo is taking his passion even further. He founded Gem Studios, a music studio in Athens designed to provide a space where other musical talents can develop their ideas and bring their artistic visions to life.
