NUAA NSW

NUAA NSW NUAA is a not-for-profit NSW-based organisation advocating for people who use drugs.

The NSW Users and AIDS Association (NUAA) is a not-for-profit NSW-based organisation advocating for people who use drugs, particularly those who inject drugs. The peak drug user organisation in NSW, NUAA was formed in 1989 in the face of a growing HIV epidemic. A group of drug users, their friends, families and supporters established NUAA as an independent, user-driven community-based organisation

. Funded primarily by the NSW Health Department, NUAA provides education, practical support, information and advocacy to users of illicit drugs, their friends, and allies. NUAA has often led the way in developing innovative approaches to peer education and community development, and has contributed to Australia having one of the lowest HIV rates amongst injecting drug users in the world.

Meet NUAA’s Director of Program, Alice (she/her).

Alice has officially worked with NUAA for the past seven years but has been around the organisation for nearly a decade. She joined NUAA as one of DanceWize NSW’s first volunteers all the way back in 2017.

“I was passionate about harm reduction and changing the way society understands drugs and the people who use them.

“I'd clearly found my people through DanceWize, so as jobs came up that I was at all qualified for, I would apply.”

In 2019 Alice was hired as a casual and she’s never looked back. Seven years later she holds an executive role at NUAA managing some of the organisations most ambitious projects including Drug Checking and peer workforce training.

Alice readily admits that her passion for harm reduction came from noticing her own internalised stigma when she was young. Though having experience of drug use herself, she realised she would judge her partner for using intravenously. Thankfully, she caught herself and decided she wanted to better educate herself and society at large.

“I'd love to see drugs framed not as a criminal problem (maybe not even a health problem) but as a social issue that doesn't require criminal law just promoting the welfare of the whole community.”

Alice wrote her honours thesis on how Australia's National Drug Strategy governs gender despite claiming gender neutrality, graduating top of her class and going on to complete a Masters of Law.

Her focus on policy and storytelling has played a large role in Alice’s career. She helped develop Unharm’s StoryLab program and used her experience to support NUAA’s SHARE training and Speaker Network.

Despite her hard work, Alice says her team plays a big role in her success.

“I've been incredibly lucky to have a group of absolute legends who do amazing work and make me look good in the process. Biased, but I think they're the best.”

When not at work, Alice enjoys spending time with her long-haired Chihuahua (and absolute terror) Maisy, reading cowboy romances and chilling with her partner. She’s also recently decided to get back into horse riding after a 25-year break. 🐎

🎈 On May 6th 2026, the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) turned 25 years old. Users News attended this week's event at NSW parliament, which was a celebration of MSIC's many achievements, but also a call for what comes next.

🗨️ Peers spoke about shame, survival, and what it means to be treated like a human being. Former premiers reflected on the political battles it took to get here. One question kept surfacing: if we know this works, why does NSW law still only allow one? ❓️

NSW’s commitment to ending HIV transmission continues with the launch of the NSW HIV Strategy 2026–2030.

The Strategy builds on strong progress in HIV prevention, testing and treatment across the state, while strengthening the focus on equity and access for communities that have not benefited equally.

Developed in partnership with community organisations, clinicians, researchers and people most affected by HIV, the Strategy sets out a coordinated, evidence‑based approach to further reduce transmission and support people living with HIV to live long, healthy lives.
