🐾 Volunteer feeding help needed in Smithfield

Pete is looking for a few kind, reliable people to help feed a small number of cats in the Smithfield area.

He and his partner started caring for these hungry cats around seven months ago. Sadly, his partner passed away in July, and Pete has been managing the nightly feeds alone travelling from suburbs away.

He’s always been there for the cats, but he really needs some help.

Could you spare an evening occasionally to help feed the cats? Even one night here and there would make a real difference and take some of the pressure off Pete.

LAWS ONLY WORK WHEN WE ACTUALLY ACT
NSW already has laws covering microchipping, registration and animal abandonment. The bigger question is whether those laws are being effectively implemented and enforced.
Mandatory identification was introduced more than 25 years ago with a clear purpose: cats and dogs should be identifiable and traceable, particularly when they are sold or given away.
Yet we still have a significant population of unidentified and unregistered cats, making it harder to trace ownership and address abandonment when it occurs.
NSW's own Parliamentary inquiry found that only around half of pet cats were estimated to be microchipped and only around a quarter registered.
The scale of the problem is enormous. A NSW Parliamentary inquiry cited a low-confidence estimate of more than 700,000 stray cats in highly modified areas such as urban environments.
And we need to recognise that these populations are not all the same. Stray, semi-owned, abandoned and genuinely feral cats present different challenges and require different responses.
Cat containment has a very important role to play, and CatCare Alliance supports containment as a long-term goal. But containment will not solve the problem on its own.
If we want better outcomes, we need a coordinated approach that tackles both the causes and the consequences:
• Better enforcement of existing microchipping, registration and abandonment laws
• Subsidised or free desexing programs for people who need assistance
• Practical support to help owners transition cats to safe containment
• Community education and support for responsible cat ownership
• Changes to the Companion Animals Act to allow appropriately managed, temporary TNR programs where appropriate

WHEN RESCUE BECOMES THE SOLUTION
Somewhere along the way, we’ve made cat rescue too convenient for everyone except the people doing the rescuing. We've made it easy for the public and those who represent us at local, State and Federal level. :(
Someone's cat had kittens because she wasn’t desexed?
“Call a rescue.”
Found a dumped or stray cat?
“Call a rescue.”
Someone moved and can’t take their cat?
“Call a rescue.”
Cats breeding in someone's backyard?
“Call a rescue.”
Cats living and breeding at a local factory unit or shopping centre?
"Call a rescue."
And when the rescue says they’re full?
Suddenly the rescue is the problem.
But rescue isn’t an unlimited service.
There are only so many foster homes. So much money. So many hours in the day. And the people answering those messages are mostly volunteers who work, have families and lives outside of rescuing cats.
This is something we need to start talking about in NSW.
Rescue is incredibly important. But it shouldn’t become the place where everyone else’s responsibilities end up.
We need to put more focus on PREVENTION. More focus on DESEXING. More focus on MICROCHIPPING. Keeping owned cats safe and contained. Taking responsibility for the animals we choose to have. Not dumping them when we want to go on holidays or move house. Not letting them to breed. Not letting them wander.
And we need a system that supports people who are trying to help cats, rather than quietly expecting volunteers to keep cleaning up the mess.
At CatCare Alliance, we believe rescue matters.
But prevention matters too.
And responsibility matters.
Because we can’t rescue our way out of this problem.

FOUND A STRAY CAT OR KITTENS? Here's What to Do

Good intentions can still cause harm if you act without the right info.
Don't assume they're stray. Cats are legally allowed to roam in NSW, and their condition doesn't tell you ownership. A loved pet can look rough. An unowned cat can look healthy.
If you've found an adult cat
• Check for a collar and take a clear photo
• Post in local Facebook groups asking if anyone recognises them
• Print up a found a cat flyer and put into letterboxes in the local area
• Contact local vets or rescue groups to get the cat scanned for a microchip
• Always ask for proof of ownership before handing a cat over to anyone claiming it's theirs

Before you catch them know where they're going! Once you catch a cat, they're your responsibility. Vets won’t take them in and they risk euthanasia if you take them to the pound.
Found kittens?
• With mum, under 4 weeks: Don't separate them. Monitor from a distance and plan to bring them all in together
• Alone and very young: Mum will likely be close by. Sprinkle plain flour around the area and check for paw prints later. She could just be out hunting for food. DON’T TAKE THE KITTENS UNTIL YOU’RE SURE MUM ISNT COMING BACK!!
• Older kittens: Your best window to trap and socialise, but you need a plan to catch the whole litter at once
Don't take just one or two. Also remember, if the kittens are very young, removing very young kittens can be fatal for them. Taking only some kittens can make mum move or abandon the rest too so its important they stay together.

Bear is in a bad way. His skin is crusty and he smells terrible. His mouth is sore and full of rotten teeth, and yet he still leans into a human hand when it offers him a bit of kindness. He's gone far too long struggling to survive without anyone looking after him.

Bear has now been secured and is getting vet treatment. He's having trouble breathing and likely has cat flu. He's also bleeding a little from his nose, which worries us. He's dehydrated, skinny and badly undernourished. You can't tell now, but he should have a medium to long haired grey coat. Right now it has no shine at all.
He must be in pain, but he's still so trusting.
Can you help with Bear's care? Every dollar goes toward the treatment he needs. Bear was rescued by Mulligan Meows, a registered charity, and every donation over $2 is tax deductible.

CONTAINING CATS - LITTLE STEPS
Keeping cats contained is the right call for their safety and for local wildlife. Nobody's arguing that. But can we be honest about how hard it actually is for a lot of people to pull off?
'Just keep them inside' sounds simple until you're the one living it.
You're renting and your landlord isn't approving an enclosure or cat proof fencing anytime soon.
You've priced up a proper outdoor enclosure and nearly fell over. 😱
Your cat spent years as a stray or free roamer and treating four walls like home isn't happening overnight.
Or you've got an escape artist who's out the door the second it's cracked open.
RSPCA NSW has actually landed in a similar spot on this. Their own promotion on containment is built around voluntary, realistic change, not perfection.
So if full time indoor living isn't happening at your place right now, here's what still moves the needle:
* Get them desexed. Still the single biggest thing you can do for roaming and fighting.
* Bring them in overnight as a minimum. Dusk to dawn indoors cuts road accidents and hunting a lot.
* Boost the indoor enrichment. Scratching posts, window perches, puzzle feeders, anything that burns energy.
* Get your cat microchipped – it’s the law! If microchip and collar details are current, an accidental escape isn't a disaster.
* Support your local desexing programs. That's the bigger picture piece. Get that concept out there – desexing works!
Nobody needs to be doing this perfectly. We just need most people doing something!
