📸 Honouring Service Through the Lens of History

City of Wollongong RSL sub-Branch member John Fairley travelled the length of South Vietnam as an official Australian Army photographer, documenting Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War from the ground up.

John’s images captured more than military operations, they told human stories. Australian soldiers in the field, moments of quiet between patrols, and connections with South Vietnamese villagers and children. Many of these photographs were taken under fire, often while embedded with combat units, and much of his work remained unseen for decades.

His photography has since featured in multiple exhibitions at the Australian War Memorial, forming an important part of Australia’s military history. Today, his work continues to educate, provoke reflection, and honour those who served.

We’re proud to recognise John as part of our Wollongong RSL sub-Branch community and to share his story.

New South Wales Governor Margaret Beazley will remain in the role for a further two years following an extension approved this week. Premier Chris Minns confirmed the continuation after his recommendation was endorsed, allowing Beazley to serve until May 2028.

The decision means she will complete a total of nine years as governor.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday, with the premier citing confidence in her experience and service to the state.
