Every yarn matters. Every perspective counts.

As the NSW Treaty Commission continues its Treaty Yarns, a reminder goes out to all community members: this is your space. These consultations are a dedicated, safe environment for respectful dialogue where all Mob are welcome to share their views, stories, and lived experiences.

Treaty, agreement-making, truth-telling, and sovereignty are deeply important topics. It’s completely natural to have different perspectives on what they mean. All viewpoints make the discussions stronger, and every single one deserves to be heard with respect.

To ensure everyone can contribute, the Commissioners are deeply committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment with a few ground rules:

- Everyone has the right to participate safely, free from judgment or hostility.

- Different ideas and perspectives are expected and valued.

- Zero Tolerance when it come to Intimidation, harassment, or any behavior that prevents others from speaking up is not acceptable, and you may be asked to leave.

Your voice is vital to this journey. Come along, share your perspective, and let's yarn with respect. 🖤💛❤️

“Treaty is not a new conversation."

Lindsay Hardy, Stakeholder Manager at the University of Newcastle's Wollotuka Institute, reminds us that the path forward is built on decades of momentum—from the Makarrata to early conversations spearheaded by the NSW Aboriginal Land Council in the 1990s.

As we look toward the future, we don't need to reinvent the wheel. Let’s honour and build upon the groundwork already laid by our community leaders for the generations to come.

Today, we mark Mabo Day—a pivotal moment in our nation’s history.

On June 3, 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered its landmark decision, overturning the legal myth of terra nullius (land belonging to no one) and rightfully recognising Eddie Koiki Mabo and the Meriam people as the traditional owners of their lands.

Mabo Day is a powerful reminder that First Nations sovereignty was never ceded. It laid the legal foundation for land rights, but the journey towards true justice and structural change continues.

Today, we honour the courage of Eddie Mabo and all those who fought alongside him. Let’s carry their determination forward as we walk together toward a just, negotiated future.
