That’s how AABR bush regenerator Tom Clarke describes the work underway at Crowdy Bay National Park.

Why? Because this is a rare situation where bush regeneration hasn’t been tightly constrained by budgets and schedules.

The team can return when the bush needs them. Spend the time required. Watch succession unfold. Respond to what the site is doing.

On Saturday 5 September, Tom will take a small group through sites around Kylie’s Beach affected by the November 2019 fire.

Seven years of recovery. Years of observation and intervention. And plenty to talk about.

What if the bush set the works schedule? 🌿

At Crowdy Bay National Park, a long-running volunteer bush regeneration program has had something practitioners don’t always get: time.

Time to watch.

Time to see succession happening.

Time to decide when intervention is needed – and when natural recovery is already doing the job.

AABR bush regenerator Tom Clarke calls it “a lovely situation where we are keeping pace with the processes”.

On Saturday 5 September, we’re heading into the field with Tom to see what that looks like seven years after the November 2019 fire.

This isn’t just a walk through a recovering landscape. It’s a chance for bush regenerators, land managers and volunteers to compare observations, question approaches and share post-fire knowledge gained through years of working with the site.

BEST PRACTICE ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION GUIDANCE ASSESSMENTS UNDERWAY

The ERIK Project Team in the Australian Association of Bush Regenerators is excited to share that a growing number of ecological restoration practitioners are responding to our invitation to join Expert Panels for specific vegetation types.

Assessors are reviewing the quality of existing restoration resources, identifying whether they represent best practice restoration methodologies or where improvements can be made, and noting any caveats that should accompany resources before they are uploaded to the ERIK platform. New resources are also being developed for the platform, consistent with AABR recognised practices and the Society for Ecological Restoration Standards.

The assessments are identifying resources for our initial upload to the ERIK platform and helping AABR’s collaboration with the Science Branch of the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, which will use the knowledge and practice gap analysis the assessments allow to identify future research needs. ERIK findings are also informing AABR’s input into the NSW Government’s new Nature Strategy , which will set the direction for achieving nature positive outcomes through repairing and regenerating the environment.

As the project moves forward, AABR will support Expert Panel members to build long-term working relationships and strengthen cross-sector collaboration. The invitation to join an Expert Panel remains open. We are seeking experienced restoration scientists practitioners and managers to join panels in their regions of expertise.
