🌱 World Environment Day is the perfect time to continue the conversation about grassland conservation and ecological restoration.

We're pleased to announce that recordings from Grassland Resurrection: Connecting Knowledge, Research and Management are now available online.
📺 Access the recordings here: https://www.youtube.com/

The forum brought together researchers, Traditional Owners, land managers, bush regenerators, conservation practitioners and community advocates to explore the future of Victoria's critically endangered grasslands. Through knowledge sharing and collaboration, participants examined practical pathways for protecting, restoring and managing these unique ecosystems.

Thank you to all speakers, attendees and our co-hosts, Grassy Plains Network and Merri Creek Management Committee, for contributing to such a thoughtful and inspiring event.

We encourage everyone working in ecological restoration, land management and conservation to watch the recordings and share them with colleagues and networks.

The Basalt Buddies are a loose collective of grassland enthusiasts doing an awful lot on a shoestring and goodwill.
They collect and grow seed selling it on at markets and supporting respected elders to recreate grasslands in their backyards.
Providing a first connection with the conservation of grasslands for many and a safe place to learn and explore, anyone who joins in becomes a buddy.

John Delpratt's story of the grasslands of south-west Victoria highlighted decades of research in grassland reconstruction which has produced species rich grasslands from retired agricultural land has shown that restoration at scale is possible and the tools exist to do that now

Lincoln Kern's presentation on biomass management techniques shared how grazing can be managed and utilised as a biomass management technique.
He argued that grasslands shouldn't be cleared, there are not enough sites at present to provide offsets.
Monitoring biomass to identify when its reduction is needed is vital and always bring in w**d control after biomass reduction

Michael Goddard implored for a massive restoration fund created from natural asset useage.
He showed projections of grassland loss at 10%/year with an immenent extinction vortex unless restorative action was undertaken at scale.
Key aspects to preventing extinction include
1.include more grassland in conservation reserves
2.undertake more biomass management and w**d control
3.more monitoring
4.extensive reconstruction by 'an army' of restorationists using new tech.

Ben Courtice provided some good examples of Victorian grasslands, cautioning against planting woody species, commonly planted beyond their range eg. Gold dust Wattle, that may compromise forbe success in future years.
The take home was look after the rarer grasslands. Avoid using EVC lists as planting lists. If you have to plant woody species, plant in clumps to avoid outcompeting rarer species.
