Are we raising children who are too soft?

If you've seen this debate online, here's a steadier take. Alicia McAleer, our Practice Specialist – Child, Youth & Family, says gentle parenting has been unfairly demonised: real gentle parenting includes firm boundaries, and it's often confused with permissive parenting, which doesn't.

But she's equally clear that resilience grows through experience. Sometimes the hardest parenting job is sitting with the discomfort of watching your child struggle, because working through a lost game or a low mark is exactly how they learn they can handle hard moments.

If your family doesn't look like the happy ones on TV, you're in good company.

Michael Davy, our Practice Specialist – Counselling & Groups, says the families he sees thrive aren't the ones without bumps. They're the ones built on safety and warmth, where everyone belongs while staying themselves, and where people find their way back to each other after conflict. His advice covers the everyday signs of a healthy family, the boundaries that protect everyone's dignity and the patterns worth noticing early.

Co-parenting is one of the hardest jobs there is, especially while emotions are still raw.

Martin Meszaros, our Practice Lead – Mediation, shares the mindset shift that helps most: you are no longer partners, but you will be parents for the rest of your life. This article covers the practical side, from consistent routines across two homes to handling birthdays, holidays and travel, and the sensitive moments too, like when and how new partners are introduced. Through it all, one principle holds: talk about the children, not about the other parent.

Will the social media ban actually work?

If you're parenting through it right now, you've probably asked. Kristy Turnbull, our Practice Specialist – School Services, offers a steadying view: the ban may reduce some risks and even make some family negotiations easier, but children's resilience isn't built by removing risk alone. Her practical advice for the meantime: prioritise connection over control, let boredom do its work (it's where creativity begins) and build small screen-free rituals, like asking your child to share one thing they learned each day.

Every parent knows the feeling of wanting to take a worry away.

Alicia McAleer, our Practice Specialist – Child, Youth & Family, wants parents to hear something reassuring first: anxiety is a normal, healthy emotion, and you're already the expert on your child. Her advice covers when everyday worry becomes something to watch, why avoiding the worry can quietly make it stronger and the simple ways children borrow calm from the adults around them.

If anxiety is affecting your child's school, friendships or sleep, support is available.

Here's something every exhausted parent deserves to hear.

Attachment research suggests you only need to respond positively to your child's needs 40 per cent of the time to build secure attachment. Alicia McAleer, our Practice Specialist – Child, Youth & Family, shares that stat because tough days are part of parenting, not a failure of it.

In this article, we cover the simple things that matter most: predictable routines, naming feelings out loud, letting kids try hard things and looking after yourself too, because you can't pour from an empty cup.

How does separation affect children?

If you're facing separation, this question probably weighs on you more than any other. Alicia McAleer, our Practice Specialist – Child, Youth & Family, wants parents to hear this first: it's not the separation itself that causes the deepest harm. It's ongoing conflict, and children feeling caught in the middle.

Her advice covers what children need at every age, how to have the conversation and why repair matters more than perfection.

✨ A beautiful story of generosity that spans decades!

In this clip from 100 Years of Working Together, the third film in our centenary series, Sarah Samild uncovers the remarkable history of Dr. R Bonamy.

In 1964, this generous GP offered us a rent-free premises in Gymea, an arrangement that continued for 26 years!

Decades later, Dr. Bonamy met with our CEO, Graeme O'Connor, showing us all that a true commitment to supporting the community leaves an incredible, lasting legacy.

📖 Uncovering stories from our past as we celebrate 100 years! 🎉

This moment is from 100 Years of Working Together, the third film in our centenary series.

Watch as Sarah Samild sits down with our CEO, Graeme O'Connor, to discuss a fantastic piece of Interrelate history. In the 1930s, Canon Hammond of HammondCare showed incredible generosity by offering free board and rent to our first Director, Percy Kenny. This community partnership lasted right into the 1950s!

As Graeme says, it's the 'generosity of passionate people' that has enabled our organisation to be here today.
