As part of the America 250th celebration, the Captain James Cook Chapter, NSDAR, sponsored an essay contest entitled “Illuminating the Spirit of 1776.” The contest was conducted from mid-March through the end of May and attracted numerous outstanding submissions.
The winning essay was written by Chapter member and Registrar Mary Jo. Her essay, “James Burroughs, An Ordinary Man,” was selected as the overall winner.

Honorable Mention awards were presented to two additional authors:

Kim, an Associate Member from the Sioux Lookout Chapter in North Platte, Nebraska, for her essay “Howard Leslie Carey: A Patriotic American.”
Julia, an Associate Member from the Colonel Thomas Dorsey Chapter in Ellicott City, Maryland, for her essay “Kerenhappuch Norman Turner.”
We are thrilled with the results of this project and the compilation of outstanding essays that emerged from it. We invite everyone to enjoy the complete essay booklet, which is available for online viewing at the following link:

Yesterday, we commenmorated The Battle of Bunker Hill and the Rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes.
Dawes went over the land route from Boston to Roxbury, then over the Charles River by bridge. Several months later, Dawes fought at Bunker Hill.
William Dawes luckily survived both and his descendants made it to Australia.
Several CJC members met yesterday and discussed 250 years of American Heritage. Jeanne flew, in from Adelaide and Jenny came down from the Central Coast.
We had a lovely day.
