🌟 Halfway through 2026 β€” how are your goals going?

With the long weekend here and the first six months of the year almost behind us, it’s a good time to pause and check in.

Maybe you started the year wanting to build more confidence, speak more clearly, meet new people, take on a new challenge, or grow your leadership skills.

Or maybe life got busy, and some of those goals quietly slipped into the background.

The good news is β€” the second half of the year is a great time to refresh, try something new, and take a small step forward.

At Burwood Toastmasters, members practise communication and leadership in a friendly, supportive environment. That can include:

🎀 speaking more confidently
πŸ—£οΈ explaining ideas clearly
🀝 meeting and connecting with new people
πŸ‘₯ learning how to manage meetings
πŸ’Ό building interview and workplace communication skills
🌱 developing leadership skills
πŸ’¬ giving and receiving helpful feedback

You do not need to be an experienced speaker to come along. Most people start because they want to improve.

Our next meeting is:

πŸ“… Wednesday, 10 June 2026
πŸ•– 7:00pm
πŸ“ Club Burwood RSL

Guests are very welcome to visit, sit in, enjoy the meeting, and see what Toastmasters is all about.

Send us a message if you’d like to find out more 😊

🌟 Burwood Toastmasters Meeting Highlights
πŸ“… 27 May 2026

There was plenty happening at our 27 May meeting, with five prepared speeches, evaluations, Table Topics, and a special Area Director report from Bruno.

It was a great chance to hear not only from our speakers, but also to reflect on how Burwood Toastmasters is going as a club β€” what we are doing well, the strengths we continue to build on, and the contribution Burwood makes across the District.

🎀 Prepared Speeches

Tina gave us an interesting look at family and household structures in northwest Cambodia, exploring how gender roles and breadwinner patterns can vary across communities.

Johnny shared his journey from consulting to starting his own business, including the mindset shift, uncertainty and resilience involved in taking that step.

Rose reminded us that public speaking is not about being perfect β€” it is about serving the audience and focusing on what they need.

Jessy reflected on university, education and lifelong learning, encouraging members to recognise their strengths and keep growing through new opportunities.

Graham introduced many of us to the basics of pickleball in β€œTo Be Pickled or Not To Be Pickled”, using a professionally crafted PowerPoint presentation that added visual style, clarity and strong audience appeal.

πŸ‘ Evaluations

Thank you to Derya, Diana, Graham, Shane and Jessy for their evaluations, with each speaker receiving something useful to take into their next speech.

🎯 Table Topics & Big Ears

Linda led a fun Table Topics session, with members thinking quickly and bringing plenty of humour to the room.

Tom and Bruno provided the Table Topics evaluations, and Johnny followed with Big Ears, adding another light-hearted part to the night.

πŸ“‹ Area Director Report

Bruno, as Area 6 Director, shared his report on Burwood Toastmasters and recognised the club’s strong meeting culture, welcoming atmosphere, member support and positive contribution to Area 6.

It was a proud moment for the club and a good reminder of the consistent work members put in to make Burwood such a warm, active and supportive place to learn.

A special thanks (πŸ™) to Bruno for his time as our Area 6 Director for the 2025-26 year. As a Burwood Club member it’s a highlight to see our members perform well in District leadership roles; including our member Nelly as the nearby Area 31 Director! πŸ‘

⏱️ Role Spotlight: Timer ⏱️

Simple role. Big impact.

The Timer helps the meeting stay on track with clear green, yellow and red signals, and a short timing report to help members build awareness of time.

It’s a great first role β€” and an important one β€” because good timing helps every meeting run smoothly, fairly and confidently.

πŸŽ‰ Burwood Toastmasters at the District 90 Conference πŸŽ‰

A proud weekend for Burwood Toastmasters as members attended District 90’s final conference before the upcoming alignment and reunification into one District 70.

It was a privilege to be part of such a significant moment for District 90 β€” celebrating its achievements, connecting with fellow Toastmasters, and sharing in the friendship and community that makes Toastmasters so special. πŸ’™βœ¨

One of the best parts of the day was cheering on our club member Hendrik, who competed in the Evaluation Contest representing his dual club.

Hendrik handled himself with confidence and composure, and Burwood members were proud to be there supporting him. πŸ‘πŸŽ€

After the conference, a few of us kept the day going over lunch β€” plenty of food, laughs and good conversation. A lovely reminder that Toastmasters is not only about speaking and leadership, but also the friendships built along the way. πŸ•πŸ˜„

Congratulations to District 90 on a memorable final conference and being so welcoming to us all. πŸ™We look forward to coming together again as one District 70. 🌟

🌟 Burwood Toastmasters Meeting Highlights
πŸ“… 13 May 2026

Our 13 May meeting was a full and lively night, with speeches, club elections, Table Topics, thoughtful feedback, and plenty of good humour along the way.

Shane chaired the evening, Graham opened with a warm President’s welcome, and Johnny shared the Toastmasters mission. Diana introduced the Word of the Night β€” β€œbudget” β€” with a thoughtful explanation about balance, which ended up being a fitting theme for the night.

🎀 Prepared Speeches

Claudia delivered β€œA Matter of Taste”, making a fun and creative case for salty snacks over sweet ones.

Tina shared her journey of learning English, speaking openly about the challenges, setbacks and determination that helped her keep going.

Bruno reflected on leadership in β€œA Boy Who Didn’t Chase Leadership… But Somehow Leadership Chased Him”, sharing how leadership has shaped his path and his next steps as Area 6 Director.

Thank you to Bruno, Claudia and Johnny for their evaluations, and to Linda for a lovely toast celebrating new beginnings and the value of giving things a go.

πŸ—³οΈ Club Elections & Meeting Management

The second half of the night included our club committee elections, professionally led by Hendrik.

One of the real standouts was how enjoyable and efficient the meeting remained β€” even with club elections and a full Table Topics session where 10 members and guests took part, we still finished right on time.

⏱️ It was a great reminder that meeting management and timekeeping are real skills β€” keeping things moving, giving people a chance to participate, and finishing on time takes teamwork.

🎯 Table Topics

The Table Topics session brought plenty of laughs and quick thinking, with members and guests stepping up to take on the challenge.
