“It is not hard to abate when there is a business case.”
But maybe the better question is:
Has it actually been assessed properly?
Too often, “hard to abate” becomes a conclusion before the alternatives have been properly examined. It can become a label that protects existing systems rather than a test that challenges them.
The Clean Alternative Assessment Method, part of the NoCO2 Net Zero Standard, is designed to change that.
It provides a structured way to assess fossil-fuelled plant, equipment and systems against available cleaner alternatives, considering technical readiness, operational suitability, cost, lifecycle emissions and transition timing.
The purpose is not to pretend every replacement is easy.
The purpose is to stop treating “hard to abate” as a default position.
If a cleaner alternative exists, is technically viable, and has a reasonable business case, then the question changes from:
“Is this hard to abate?” to “Why has it not been replaced?”
The NoCO2 Net Zero Standard is open-source and free to download.
