🌱 Sustainability and Resilience: Building Safer, Smarter Healthcare

Sustainability is increasingly recognised as an essential part of quality, safe and person-centred healthcare.

The Healthcare Sustainability and Resilience Module provides a framework for health services to strengthen resilience to climate-related risks while embedding sustainability into everyday governance, safety and quality improvement.

It highlights five key areas for action: leadership and culture, evidence-based care, measurement and improvement, workforce training, and communication and partnerships.

A new self-assessment tool can also help organisations identify opportunities, track progress and prepare for assessment and accreditation.

🌱 Sustainability is a quality imperative.

Healthcare has made important progress in reducing its environmental footprint, from renewable energy and waste reduction to sustainable procurement and transport.

But a recent Australian review highlights a critical opportunity of moving beyond sustainability initiatives to embed decarbonisation into clinical care.

The decisions made every day about investigations, treatments, procedures, medications and models of care can influence both patient outcomes and environmental impact.

βœ”οΈ Strong leadership and organisational commitment
βœ”οΈ Reducing low-value care and unnecessary variation
βœ”οΈ Preparing for climate-related risks and disruptions
βœ”οΈ Using data to measure sustainability and drive improvement

At ACHS, supporting our community is an important part of who we are. Through our FY2025/26 Workplace Giving Program, our staff came together to support the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, helping raise funds and awareness for Australians experiencing homelessness.

This year, we were especially proud to support our Executive Director, Aisling Forrest, who participated in her first Vinnies CEO Sleepout. Thanks to the generosity of ACHS staff, along with contributions from Aisling's family and friends, more than $5,300 was raised for this important cause.
