Collieries’ Staff and Officials Association

Collieries’ Staff and Officials Association Trade union representing staff, supervisors, deputies, OCEs, technical and administrative workers in the Black Coal Mining Industry since 1921.

Our History

In 2001 Australian Collieries’ Staff Association (ACSA) amalgamated with The Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists & Managers, Australia (APESMA), now known as Professionals Australia. This formed the Collieries’ Staff and Officials Association (CSOA). The two associations joined together to further strengthen their collective voice and resources to best represent professi

onals across the country. ACSA has been fighting for the rights of workers in the coal mining industry since 1944. It was responsible for such wins as severance pay in 1973 and redundancy pay in 1983. ACSA, and now CSOA, has continued to secure pay rises and safe conditions for all who work at the coalface. In 2016 the Collieries’ Staff and Officials Association won a landmark case against Centennial Coal over their policy of age-discrimination that saw workers over 60 not receiving redundancy pay. All Centennial Coal workers now have full redundancy pay locked in their agreements.

💪 CSOA Goonyella members are standing together in their fight to protect and improve their conditions in an enterprise agreement. 💪

Their application to require BHP to commence bargaining with Supervisors, Coordinators and Technical/Autonomous Specialists was recently heard by the Fair Work Commission. A big thank you to workplace reps Derek and Shaun who made the trip to Brisbane to represent CSOA Goonyella members at the hearing!

With the sale of the Tahmoor Mine, our members can finally start to focus on the future of their jobs and their community.

CSOA will work with the incoming owners to ensure our members are provided with long-awaited certainty about their jobs and their workplace.

This outcome is an important step forward, and we will continue to support our members throughout the transition process.

The businessman is leading a consortium which includes GEAR that will restart operations after years of strain under the British industrialist’s ownership.

As Co-Chair of Women in Mining and Resources Queensland (WIMARQ), CSOA Member Kristy plays an important role in supporting and advancing opportunities for women in the mining and resources industry.

We were delighted to support Kristy and WIMARQ by attending their recent Moranbah Career Day and contributing to the important work the organisation does to inspire and encourage the next generation of industry professionals.

As the union for Staff and Supervisors in the mining industry, we are proud to support this fantastic organisation and the valuable work being done by our members to connect, empower and create opportunities for women across the industry. May Day is a celebration of solidarity and a reminder of what’s possible when workers unite.

“For many members, CSOA membership is more than just an individual safety net but a belief in what can be achieved when workers stand together.”
