What really happens to our soft plastics once we drop them off for recycling? ๐Ÿค”

Join us tomorrow night to hear from Dr Helen Lewis, Convenor of Circular Plastics Illawarra, a community-led network that was formed to tackle the lack of soft plastics recycling options and has since expanded its work to address other problematic plastics.

Helen will share the group's vision, projects and successes, including the return of soft plastics collections, and discuss practical ways we can all reduce waste and improve recycling outcomes.

An Adjunct Professor with the Institute for Sustainable Futures at UTS, Helen has spent more than 20 years advising governments, businesses and organisations on sustainability, recycling, packaging and environmental policy.

This promises to be an informative and inspiring evening for anyone interested in practical environmental solutions.

Today OFF joined Save Sydney's Koalas and Cate Faehrmann at the Noorumba Appin Road underpass near Figtree Hill.

It was great to see the culvert underpass finally open, a far better outcome than the pipe crossing originally proposed by Lendlease.

Thanks to everyone who lodged submissions and supported the advocacy of Save Sydney Koalas and the Total Environment Centre

We also inspected the Menangle Creek koala corridor, where around 2,000 tubestock planted by Lendlease have died.

Important restoration commitments still need to be met, and there was discussion about bringing the community together for a future planting day.

The NSW Chief Scientist recommended six wildlife underpasses on the Cumberland Plain. So far there is only one. We look forward to seeing the rest delivered.

The morning finished with a special treat, spotting a beautiful koala sun baking in neighbouring Campbelltown thanks to Les from Wild Things Of Smith's Creek ๐Ÿ˜‡

OFF members were out at Dairy Creek, Oatley today for our regular Streamwatch testing, despite the cool weather.

Recent rains saw the creek flowing strongly, with slightly more acidic water than usual and clear water moving into the reed beds. Wildlife in the water was sparse, but a few moorhens, egrets and spoonbills made an appearance, while many small birds frolicked around the team as testing was carried out.

There was some good news from the litter audit, with far less rubbish than usual. Last week's heavy rain appears to have washed much of the accumulated litter downstream, leaving only a few scattered pieces behind.

A big thank you to our dedicated volunteers for braving the slippery conditions to help monitor the health of our local waterways. ๐Ÿ˜‡

Yesterday OFF members and friends enjoyed a wonderful walk through the lush bushland of Glenbrook in the lower Blue Mountains to Red Hands Cave.

After crossing the Glenbrook causeway, we followed Camp Fire Creek through a beautiful green gully filled with ferns, moss covered rocks, colourful fungi and diverse native flora beside pristine clear water.

Highlights included watching a Lyrebird performing and playing in the creek, Black Cockatoos flying overhead, giant Turpentine trees and the spectacular Red Hands Cave with its striking hand paintings beneath the rocky overhang.

After the walk we returned to Glenbrook Village for a well deserved lunch together. A lovely day out in nature and great company. Thank you Matt for organising such a fantastic day.

Today OFF members attended the Sydney Rivers Community Forum with Councillor Matt Allison: and Councillor Peter Mahoney:, joining a room full of passionate people advocating for healthier rivers, wetlands and waterways across Sydney.

Throughout the day, important conversations focused on protecting drinking water catchments, reducing plastic pollution, governance, improving stormwater management, restoring riparian zones, strengthening climate resilience and reconnecting communities with nature and culture.

Workshop groups worked together to develop solutions and vote on priority actions to push for stronger environmental protections, better planning outcomes and greater government accountability.

It was an inspiring day filled with collaboration, knowledge sharing and a strong commitment to protecting Sydneyโ€™s waterways for future generations.

Great to connect with groups including 4nature, Save Sydney's Koalas, Cooks River Alliance, AUSMAP, Georges Riverkeeper, Nature NSW, Total Environment Centre, Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, Sydney Water, Revive Oyster Bay and Catchment Community Association to name a few, all continuing to do incredible work advocating for nature and healthy waterways across our region.

Thursday nightโ€™s Georges Riverkeeper quarterly general meeting at the Hurstville Dragon Room was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when passionate people come together for our environment.

Hosted by Georges River Council, the evening brought together councillors, community representatives and environmental advocates all committed to protecting the Georges River and the bushland and waterways that sustain it.

Important decisions were endorsed including the updated constitution, strategic plan, budget and work plan, helping shape the future direction of Georges Riverkeeper.

We also heard confronting insights from Total Environment Centre about the growing microplastic crisis and the urgent need to reduce single use plastics before irreversible damage is done to our waterways and oceans.

The incredible work happening across the catchment continues to inspire, with bush regeneration, w**d eradication, native planting and tonnes of litter removed from local waterways thanks to the dedication of the Georges Riverkeeper team and volunteers.

One of the most meaningful moments of the evening was farewelling our environmental champion Kim Wagstaff from Oatley Flora and Fauna Conservation Society. Kimโ€™s 14 years of passion, knowledge and relentless advocacy for the Georges River has left a lasting legacy for our community and environment. ๐Ÿ‘

James M Deli is incredibly honoured to now represent OFF on Georges Riverkeeper and looks forward to fighting hard for healthier waterways, stronger environmental protection and a thriving natural environment for future generations. ๐Ÿ˜‡

Thank you Georges River Council, Sydney Water, Georges River Environmental Education Centre City of Canterbury Bankstown, Botany Bay and Catchment Alliance Inc. Total Environment Centre, Councillor Matt Allison:, Councillor Peter Mahoney: and everyone involved in making the evening such a success and for continuing to stand up for the Georges River.

What an incredible thing to witness at low tide in Hurstville Bay on the Georges River. A White belly Sea Eagle feeding on a Grey headed Flying Fox.

Raw, confronting and fascinating all at once. Moments like this are a reminder that even in suburban Sydney, our rivers and bushland still support amazing native wildlife. Most people never get to see nature like this up close!

Thank you to Deb Andrews for capturing and sharing these amazing photos. ๐Ÿ˜‡

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿฆ˜Extreme Heat?๐Ÿฆ˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

Join OFF research grant recipient and UNSW PhD student Courtney Adams as she explores how rising temperatures are impacting Australiaโ€™s threatened Numbats (Myrmecobius fasciatus).

As the only strictly diurnal Australian marsupial, numbats are especially vulnerable to extreme heat and climate change.

๐ŸŒณLitter Collection ๐Ÿ’ง
OFF participated in a "Key Littered Items Study" (KLIS), with Georges River Keeper in partnership with the EPA at Kyle Williams Reserve this week. This study was done with litter collection on fixed transects over a year. The data will be used to measure NSW Government state-wide targets for litter prevention: a 30% reduction in plastic litter items by 2025 and a 60% reduction in all litter items by 2030.
