National Safehouse Network

National Safehouse Network A community initiative to build a network of safehouses for DV victims to take shelter in when refuges have no available space. This is being worked on now.

Research shows that the first few weeks after leaving are the most dangerous time for women escaping from domestic violence. Yet over 70 000 women are turned away from refuges in Australia every year due to lack of space. Our suggestion is that we shelter these women in our homes on a short term (

hed refuges and match these with vetted homes from our community network. The more people participate and offer space, the more effective the program would be. You CAN do something practical to help women suffering DV by signing up to be a safehouse! Let's show that the community cares about domestic violence by offering to hide these women in our homes. The more homes we have listed, the more secure each will be. The program will not be rolled out until we have created a secure computer program to store safehouse details. We are in the process of building a website and will publish the details once it is completed. The NSN is run by a tiny group of volunteers working in their spare time. We are in the process of having our company incorporated as a Not For Profit Company limited by guarantee. There are some costs & legal work involved so it is taking some time. Further details will be provided when this is completed. Once we have incorporated, and reached our initial target of 5000 supporters we intend to seek Govt funding to get the program launched. The more supporters we have when we lodge our funding application, the more chance of it being approved. Your support is invaluable. Cheers
