- As the world shifts and reacts to uncontrollable events, as an artist, my studio has remained a sanctuary and a retreat. For this exhibition, ‘Uncertain Sanctuary’ I wanted to evoke a state of mind, utilising imagery representing ‘the self’ – as a floating studio. What was once a stable creative space now feels unsettled and uncertain, reflecting my experiences with illness and mortality. I am conscious of feeling adrift – liberated yet vulnerable to upsets and mishaps. To create a sense of instability this collage can be seen as both interior/exterior, and upside down.

Final moments I - Glaciers of Svalbard – ice memories

This series of cyanotypes is an exploration of ice and the sanctuary it creates. Svalbard, a haven for Sea (polar) Bears, seals, whales and birdlife, is melting at an unprecedented rate. Glaciers that formed over millennia are fast becoming rivers of fresh water. As this ice inundates the oceans with its meltwater, little is left to shape the memory of this loss.
Glaciers are monuments to deep time. Through cyanotypes, I examine the memory of broken glacier fragments from Svalbard, capturing not just what we see but the story each glacier has collected over time.
