Most Australians don’t think homelessness will happen to them, anyone they know or affect them in anyway.

Jan thought this - but it is simply not true.

More than 3 million Australians are at direct risk of homelessness - today - more than 1 in 10 of us.

All it may take is one major economic shock, one serious health diagnosis, one major relationship breakdown….

And if not you, then a family member or a friend or a work colleague….

But even if you are not impacted directly then increasing homelessness puts additional strain on health systems, justice services, government funding and increases pressures on affordable housing.

In short, homelessness affects us all in one way or another.

But the good news is, with all of us working together, things can change.

The Housing Crisis matters.

People sleeping on the streets, in cars, moving from place to place, matters.

Australia being able to end homelessness but not doing it, matters.

The quote, widely attributed to Martin Luther King Jr. should be a challenge to us all….because only with our collective voices and actions can Australia be the first country where everyone who wants and needs a safe, stable secure place to call home….has one.

You probably recognise these words from the song - ‘You’re The Voice.’

As parents we want our children to be safe, secure, healthy etc. As Australians we want our communities to be a better place.

Yet still too many are without safe, stable, secure, affordable housing….it’s not just a problem we can solve…it is about looking after someone’s daughter or someone’s son…..just like we would hope for our own….regardless of age, background or reason.

The more important question is: ‘What is the cost of everyone not having safe secure stable housing?’

In 2021 NSW government estimated $31,000 per year per homeless person. (‘Pathways to Homelessness Report’)

Imagine if the government incentivized home owners with substantial tax free incentives and low interest funding to build granny flats in their backyards and lease them on long term leases to community housing providers for affordable housing.

How many extra people would we be able to house?

How many extra jobs/apprenticeships?

How much could this help homeowners with extra tax free income?

Could this enable older persons to downsize on their own property - freeing up larger homes for families in need?

Let’s stop pinning all our hopes on large scale, higher density housing…that is one solution but there are others….

That’s why we believe in ‘housing first’….as a springboard into a better life.

This is a fair enough question to ask - surely homelessness is just part of life in the world we live.

And there are so many responses - here are a few of ours:

* Because every safe secure place to call home helps someone who, like everyone of us, has dreams and hopes for their life.

* Because every tiny home we can build is a step closer to ending homelessness and freeing up resources for other community needs and causes (eg. Better health, education etc.)

* Because simpler housing is a pathway to more affordable housing for all.

* Because together we can achieve more than any of us can individually.

* Because communities where everyone has a stable place to call home are better communities for all of us to live in.

Too often when a problem is not being solved we can tell ourselves that it is because it is ‘complex’.

Yes there are complexities in life but is providing enough social and community housing one of them?

Is it too expensive? We don’t agree.

A shortage of available land? No, we don’t believe that.

Lack of trades available to build…. We don’t think so.

We believe Australia can (and should) be the first country where everyone who wants and needs a safe secure place to call home - has one. And that it can happen in a few short years.

Solving homelessness and better communities start with more affordable housing.

Curing cancer is complex….building more social housing is not.
