It was great to welcome some of our delegates from across Victoria over the last two days for the first ever local government-specific Stage One Delegate Training for Victorian LGEA/PA delegates.

Our delegates are a vital part of the LGEA, keeping the LGEA team updated on matters at their council, supporting and assisting their local members, and representing the LGEA and Professionals Australia at their council.

It has been a fantastic two days of learning, connecting and building delegate skills specific to local government. This is just the beginning, with more delegate training tailored for local government delegates coming throughout the year.

A big thank you to all delegates who joined us and continue to strengthen our union in local government across Victoria.

On Friday, LGEA Executive Officer, Alycia Vasilangos, Bede Spannagle, LGEA President and Stuart Small, LGEA Vice President (and National PA Treasurer), represented members at the Commonwealth Parliament Offices in Sydney, giving evidence to the federal inquiry into local government funding and fiscal sustainability.

Members feedback and real-life examples were front and centre — helping us present a strong, evidence-based case for reform.

The LGEA will continue to campaign alongside members until local government is properly funded, secure jobs are restored, and councils have the workforce and resources needed to serve our communities.

Congratulations to Professionals Australia member Paul Hamer MP on being sworn in as Victoria's Minister for Local Government, Youth Justice and Corrections.

Before entering parliament in 2018, Paul worked as a civil engineer and project manager on transport infrastructure projects across Victoria. In his maiden speech, he noted that only 31 engineers had ever served in the Victorian parliament since 1856. He was number 32.

Having a qualified engineer making decisions at the cabinet table matters, especially right now. With our Local Government division, Professionals Australia is campaigning to restore local government. Our members are telling us that underfunding is driving workforce shortages, burnout and delayed infrastructure projects across councils. 92% say underfunding is already affecting infrastructure safety, quality or reliability!

We look forward to working with Minister Hamer to deliver secure jobs, adequate funding and the in-house expertise councils need to serve their communities.

We’ve been invited to give evidence to the Federal Inquiry into local government funding. This means members’ voices are being heard at the highest level.

This is not just a funding issue. It is a workforce issue, a safety issue, and a sustainability issue for the future of local government.

We will continue this campaign until local government is properly funded, secure jobs are restored, and councils have the workforce and resources needed to deliver for their communities.

Congratulations Dirk Wymer!

Recently, LGEA Organiser Mateja visited Cowra Shire Council to present Dirk with the 2025 Delegate of the Year Award.

Dirk was nominated by members for his strong support, his commitment to LGEA values, and the way he champions opportunities for young engineers. His leadership and dedication are making a real impact at his council.
