Members employed under the new Local Government (State) Award 2026, can look forward to a 4% pay increase starting from your first pay on or after today, 1 July!

This Award delivers the highest pay increase in the 34-year history of the State Award, with 4%, 4% and 4% increases over its life, while protecting existing conditions and delivering important improvements to Paid Parental Leave, new MyLeave provisions, protections around AI in the workplace and many others.

These wins are the result of the collective strength of members across local government in NSW. Thank you to every member who stood together to achieve this historic outcome.

The report found councils could face up to $280 billion in infrastructure renewal and upgrade demand over coming decades. A challenge made harder as communities grow, expectations increase and councils are asked to do more with limited resources.

Across Australia, councils are being pushed to the brink, and local government workers are carrying the pressure. Vacancies go unfilled, workloads grow, outsourcing increases, and the ability to plan and maintain essential infrastructure becomes harder every year.

When funding doesn’t keep pace with responsibility, workers and communities both pay the price.

It’s time to Restore Local Government, with adequate, ongoing funding, secure skilled jobs, and the in-house expertise councils need to deliver for their communities.

After 10 months of bargaining, we are delighted to share that the Local Government (State) Award 2026 was made yesterday before Commissioner Howell and will come into effect from 1 July 2026.

Following the strongest member turnout we have ever seen in an Award campaign, 96% of voting members endorsed the proposed Award.

The new Award delivers the highest pay increase in the 34-year history of the State Award, with 4%, 4% and 4% increases over its life, while protecting existing conditions and delivering important improvements to Paid Parental Leave, new MyLeave provisions, protections around AI in the workplace and many others.

These wins are the result of the collective strength of members across local government in NSW. Thank you to every member who stood together to achieve this historic outcome.

It was great to welcome some of our delegates from across Victoria over the last two days for the first ever local government-specific Stage One Delegate Training for Victorian LGEA/PA delegates.

Our delegates are a vital part of the LGEA, keeping the LGEA team updated on matters at their council, supporting and assisting their local members, and representing the LGEA and Professionals Australia at their council.

It has been a fantastic two days of learning, connecting and building delegate skills specific to local government. This is just the beginning, with more delegate training tailored for local government delegates coming throughout the year.

A big thank you to all delegates who joined us and continue to strengthen our union in local government across Victoria.
