The true cost of fossil gas expansion across the Asia-Pacific is exposed in Jubilee Australia’s new report - published today! ⏰

📣It presents a new, united call from frontline communities in Australia, Papua New Guinea (PNG), South Korea and Thailand for the phase out of the gas industry for cleaner, safer, more secure energy sources. 🤝🌱

Jubilee spoke to five community leaders along the gas supply chain 🗣️, from points of extraction in the Northern Territory of Australia and PNG to industrial complexes in Thailand and South Korea where gas is used. 🌏

Across countries, language and culture, these communities on the frontline are all resisting the expansion of the gas industry. ⛓️‍💥

Together, their stories expose the systemic injustices and destruction the gas industry imposes on these communities.

👂We heard reports of communities living with similar impacts spanning from increased cancer rates to polluted landscapes and loss of livelihoods.📉

😷 People living near the gas industry report severe human health impacts, including increased rates of cancer & respiratory illness.
🐟 Building & running gas infrastructure poses a severe threat to the natural environment & its biodiversity.
📉 Local communities are not seeing the economic benefits of gas + report negative impacts on their own local businesses and livelihoods.
💰The gas industry can’t foot its own bills, with taxpayer subsidies playing a key role in underwriting gas expansion.
❓Downstream infrastructure remains underutilised, questioning the need for more gas imports.
🌞 Communities are advocating for a transition to renewable energy over gas, citing it as a cleaner, cheaper alternative for energy security.

These are just some of the findings of our new report charting the journey of gas exports across its supply chain in the Asia-Pacific.

Therese Wokay Bourke is a Tiwi Elder and Traditional Owner of the Tiwi Islands.

The Tiwi Islands are a postcard tropical paradise, thrumming with life and culture. 🪸They sit at the convergence of the Arafura and Timor Seas, a precious marine ecosystem 90 kms from the coast of Darwin in Northern Australia. 🐢🐋

Tiwi people have been stewards of their land and sea for thousands of years, and they are standing strong to protect their Sea Country from fossil gas expansion.

Sukundimi Walks Before Me kicks off its Australian cinema tour in Canberra on Papua New Guinea’s Independence Day, September 16!

From a small home office in East Sepik to winning the biggest environmental film prize on Earth, Sukundimi Walks Before Me proves that when Papua New Guineans tell their own stories, the whole world stops to listen.

Sukundimi Walks Before Me is more than a film, it’s a rallying cry to support the Haus Tambaran of the Sepik, the Sepik peoples' places of governance.

It leads viewers on a journey to learn how the Sepik people are resisting a gold-and-copper mine on their own terms through a world-leading statement known as the Supreme Sukundimi Declaration.

Joining special guest Manu Peni, Project Sepik director, on our Q&A panel are some incredible panelists that we'll announce soon!

Let's stand together and celebrate this historic achievement for Papua New Guinea!

We took 250,000+ of your signatures straight to Treasurer Jim Chalmers himself - on an invoice demanding he makes the gas giants pay up.

GetUp joined forces with , , , @350.org.au, Australian Conservation Foundation, and to deliver a $69 billion invoice to Chalmers. That's the revenue Australia has missed out on since Labor came to office in 2022 – because gas corporations extract Australian gas, make record profits and we get next to nothing back.

Our petition is still running in the lead up to the budget on May 12 - link in bio to add your name!

The sparkling seas around the Tiwi Islands are thousands of kilometres away from the beaches of Chungnam province in South Korea, yet locals from these two distant shores are united in their fight to protect their homes from the expansion of the damaging gas industry. 🌊

And they are joined by communities in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Thailand.🇦🇺🇵🇬🇰🇷🇹🇭

📣Our call transcends geography, culture and language, a connection described so well by Chungnam resident Ms Cho Soon-hyung:

“In 2024 we were together with the Tiwi community. We confirmed that we had the same experiences, even if our language, culture and land is different. The damages done to us had been decided from afar, and we had to bear it. The refusal of our community to import gas, and blocking these imports, seems like it is protecting Tiwi seas.”

Ampiji is the rainbow serpent of the Tiwi Islands, in the Arafura and Timor Seas.

She is a symbol of protection for Tiwi people, and is often invoked in their advocacy to protect water and country.

This powerful artwork of Ampiji was painted by First Nations artist Purrukuwayuwu Rusinya Brooks of the Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association of Milikapiti, Tiwi Islands, and is the cover of our new report ‘Resisting the Gas Empire’.

It means so much to have Ampiji on the front cover of our new report ‘Resisting the Gas Empire’, which charts the journey of gas expansion across the Asia-Pacific, from the Tiwi Islands, Darwin and PNG to Thailand and South Korea, presenting a united call for a just energy transition as communities fight to protect their homes, land and seas.🌏

Thank you Purrukuwayuwu Rusinya Brooks and our partner Sea of Nations for sharing this art with us. 🧡
