Happy Labour day! 888

Labour day is one of the most important days in union history. Sydney stonemasons were the first workers in the world to win the 8hr day without a reduction in pay. Previously, people were working up to 16hrs a day, six days a week. This victory paved the way for sweeping reform and by 1916 the 8hr standard became law across all industries.

Today we recognise all of the union members who fought to make our lives better and think about how we can continue to fight to make the world a better place for working people.

Fair pay, fatigue protections, and safeguards against inflation: Sydney Ferry workers aren't asking for the moon. Private operator and foreign multinational company Transdev needs to come to the bargaining table and hammer out a fair deal with the workers who keep our city running.

Opal card readers will remain switched off until the 6th of October, despite Transdev's efforts to retaliate by reducing services. Union workers will not be selling, collecting, or validating tickets and fares during this time. This applies to all public ferry services including those operating from Darling Harbour, Barangaroo, Double Bay, Taronga Zoo, and Parramatta (note - private ferries like the Manly Fast Ferries are excluded).

MUA Deputy Branch Secretary Paul Garrett says, "[Our workers] have done their part for Sydney. Now Transdev needs to do its part and deliver a fair wage increase that recognises the work these workers actually perform.”

Make sure to check updated timetables before heading out, and have a great trip!
