Hi, Everyone,

Wayne and I have just finished day 12 of our walk from Barrenjoey Lighthouse to Flagstaff Lighthouse Wollongong via Parramatta. That's over 300 km completed and 3 days (and a final 50 km) to go.

We have enjoyed every moment with the minimum of pain or injury. We have been strongly supported by so many wonderful, thoughtful and kind individuals over the past 12 days. We want to thank:

Our wives. Sharon, for looking after Mum, who unfortunately broke her hip earlier this week. 🚶🏻‍♀️Yvonne, who has walked with us every step of the way.

MEET HARPER
CANCER AT AGE 2

Harper was a happy, easy-going little girl. This all changed when she got a chest infection, making her lethargic and pale. Blood tests showed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), a type of cancer where the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes.

Harper's mum, Eliza, said, “After they told us what they thought it was, it was like a mental car crash”.

Harper’s chemotherapy, infections, isolation, steroids, and frequent use of general anaesthetic had severe side effects. Her personality and physicality changed. Eliza describes, 'It was so hard seeing her like that'.

A year of intensive hospital treatment has now ended. The family has welcomed baby Adeline, and Harper enjoys being a big sister and attending daycare, too. However, life still includes hospital time.

The family is grateful for having survived ALL and for the ongoing medical advice available to Harper.

When a child is enrolled on ZERO, a cancer sample is sent to the Children’s Cancer Institute. Scientists analyse it at a molecular level, looking for clues about what drives its growth and how it might best be treated.

MEET LUCY
CANCER AT AGE 3

Lucy is described as a happy-go-lucky kid. Towards the end of Covid, when things were returning to normal, it wasn't the case for Lucy and her family.

Lucy’s mum, Sarah, found a lump on Lucy’s ribcage, and after a chest x-ray, they were advised to go to the hospital. Lucy was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer.

Lucy had to endure chemotherapy, radiation, seizures, surgery, heart complications, and neurological examinations. Her mum said, 'We’ve come close to losing her so many times, but she somehow keeps surviving everything that’s thrown at her'.

Lucy is part of the Zero Childhood Cancer Program, and genomic analysis found a gene that could be targeted with a drug if the cancer returns. There are no guarantees, but the results are comforting.

MEET WYATT
CANCER AT AGE 3

Jess describes her son Wyatt as confident, social, clever, an old soul, and a really warm little human. While going to daycare, Wyatt developed a fever, cough, ear pain, and a rash. He ended up in the hospital, where blood tests were done.

While there, his eardrum burst. After surgery, Wyatt was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.

Jess says her thoughts were, “What are you talking about? I’m not losing my son. That’s not happening.”

Wyatt’s treatment started and after 29 days, he was in remission. He then endured an additional 18 months of maintenance therapy.

Jess reflects on being an ‘oncology mum’. There’s a lot to process and a lot of pressure. She says, "We've got to achieve a 100% cure rate. That’s got to be the goal. Even if it’s not for our boy, it’s for someone’s baby. It could be Wyatt’s children. Who knows?”

MEET ASHTON
CANCER AT AGE 6

Ashton loved nature and was interested in anything with wheels. One day, a cough developed, but a chest X-ray revealed no answers. His mum, Dominique, followed up after seeing his chest protruding.

A mass was detected in his chest, and he was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (T-ALL), an aggressive malignant neoplasm of the bone marrow.

The treatment took its toll. Dominique says, ‘We were living a very chaotic, separated life. Our lives were on hold to prioritise Ashton’s health’. In 2023, Ashton achieved remission and is now doing maintenance therapy. Today, he’s back at school.

Dominique wants to raise awareness about the toxicity of cancer treatments. She says, “I’m grateful for our son's opportunities to participate in research studies. The researchers want to find cures. They are going to figure it out.”

MEET MARIA
CANCER < 3 MONTHS

Cathy, Maria’s mum, describes her as a happy and beautiful baby. One day, Maria’s ‘noisy breathing’ turned into not breathing. They rushed to the hospital for resuscitation. Every time Maria cried, her breathing stopped. It was distressing.

The X-rays showed a mass on her neck, pressing against her airway. A biopsy confirmed sarcoma called Primitive Neuro-Ectodermal Tumour (PNET).

Chemotherapy and radiation treatment took their toll over 19 months, and by the time she turned two, Maria was in remission.

Hospital checkups continue today. Maria’s treatment caused stunted growth, damaged eyesight, learning difficulties, and risks of further disease. Maria's mum said, 'I’m always living with the fear of what, or when, or if...'

From the baby with cancer to Maria today in remission. Maria is kind, respectful, and caring. We celebrate her journey and spirit.

MEET NIKKI
CANCER AS A TEENAGER

Nikki was an athlete who loved softball. One day, she started to feel unwell, with worrying symptoms; a blood test showed Nikki had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

Nikki asked her mum, "Am I going to die?" She replied, "No, but it'll be the hardest game of softball you've ever played in your life."

Nikki's cancer treatment began, her body shut down, and she was induced into a coma. After waking, Nikki had to re-learn how to speak, eat, walk, and write. Whilst her intensive treatment continued, she achieved remission in year 11 and then completed her HSC.

The side effects of her cancer treatment are many, including nerve damage, weak lungs, osteoporosis, and fertility. She also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Today, Nikki is an orthopaedic nurse who rehabilitates children with side effects of cancer and raises money for research. 👏
