THROWBACK | Kiribati Language Week 2026 🇰🇮

Celebrating the beautiful Kiribati Language Week 2026 — a celebration of language, culture, history and identity.

Kiribati, pronounced “Kiribas,” is made up of 33 islands across the Pacific. With a rich history of ocean voyaging, navigation, storytelling and community, I-Kiribati culture remains deeply connected to the sea and their islands. 🌴

Since gaining independence on 12 July 1979, Kiribati has continued to proudly carry its identity through Te taetae ni Kiribati, traditions and generations of knowledge.

As climate change brings new challenges to its islands, Kiribati continues to show that its story is not one of vulnerability, but of resilience, adaptation and strength.

Language is at the heart of that resilience — carrying culture, history and identity forward for generations to come.

Still reflecting on our time at AUPAC 2026. From meeting incredible Pasifika students across Australia, to sharing stories, culture, and memories. It was an experience we’ll carry with us. 🤍Through the highs and challenges behind the scenes, we were reminded of the strength that comes from community, family, and lifting each other up. Different islands, different journeys, but one Pasifika family. Thank you to everyone who shared this experience with us and Australian Universities Pacific Associations Conference and Griffith Pasifika Association for giving us the opportunity to experience it🫶🏽

A special thank you to our amazing girls for giving up your time, showing up for each other, and representing our community with pride. Your strength, energy, and commitment didn’t go unnoticed💙

And of course, a huge thank you to Arc - UNSW Student Life for making this experience possible. We genuinely couldn’t have done it without your support, and we’re so grateful for everything you’ve done for us. In celebration of Samoan Language Week, we asked members of our community to share their name, village, and what being Samoan means to them.

For many of us, being Samoan is more than just where we come from. It is our family, culture, values, traditions, and the communities that continue to shape who we are. While each person’s experience is unique, the pride and connection we have to our heritage is something we all share.

Fa’afetai to everyone who took part and shared a piece of their story with us. We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on what it means to be Samoan, and to honour the richness of Fa’asamoa within our community.
