Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Abdul Khalid (Khaliq) Kazi in Melbourne, a highly respected and pioneering member of the Pakistani and wider Muslim community in Australia.

Dr Kazi was among the earliest Muslims to establish himself professionally and socially in Australia. In 1961, he travelled from Karachi to Australia with his wife on a Qantas flight, stopping in Calcutta, Singapore, and Darwin before arriving in Sydney, and later settling in Melbourne.

Born in Karachi, Dr Kazi pursued higher education with great dedication. After completing his studies in Pakistan, he spent three years at Al-Azhar University in Cairo studying Islamic theology. He later earned a BA and PhD from the University of London. Through a collaborative initiative between the University of Melbourne, the Myer Foundation, the Spalding Trust of Oxford, and the Government of Pakistan, Dr Kazi was offered a five-year contract to establish an Arabic and Islamic Studies program at the University of Melbourne. Following this period, he continued to live and work in Australia, dedicating decades to teaching and mentoring generations of students.

Dr Kazi played a pivotal role in the recognition and development of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Australia. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Islamic Society of Victoria and the Australian Federation of Islamic Societies, leaving a lasting legacy within both academic and community circles.

His passing is a profound loss for his family, friends, students, and the wider Pakistani and Muslim communities. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray that Allah (SWT) grants him the highest place in Jannah and gives patience and strength to his loved ones. Ameen.
