Tomorrow (26 August) marks the 25th anniversary of Howard's unleashing of the SAS to prevent the Tampa, a Norwegian freighter, from docking at Christmas Island Tampa with the 433 asylum seekers it had rescued. It was indeed a turning point for the worse. John Howard got majority support for his militaristic approach to refugee boat arrivals, and Australia's refugee policies have spiraled downwards ever since. Much of Pauline Hanson's racist agenda back then is now government policy.
It's another reason why we'll be joining the march against the far right this Sun 30 Aug (12pm at Hyde Park north).
