What if better questions, not more resources, were the key to getting things done?

When Zak Huang, physician and global regulatory leader, joined a 200-person biotech, the company had a regulatory strategy. At least, everyone thought it did.

But nothing had been documented or agreed upon.

Rather than providing all the answers, Zak brought the team together to ask the right questions. Over four months, they worked through 160 issues, building a shared strategy that helped the company submit its US marketing application just three months after receiving Phase III data.

In the latest Cognitio episode, Zak joins former CSL colleague Neama Baho to explore what effective leadership really looks like.

Their conversation covers leading without a title, working across cultures and why great leaders focus on building their team's capability, not just delivering results.

For Antiksha Joshi, quality is about more than compliance. It is about helping people understand the why behind what they are doing.

As Director and Principal Consultant at Urmi Quality Management Consulting, Antiksha works with drug manufacturers, start-ups and CROs to develop practical quality systems that support regulatory compliance and greater efficiency.

Antiksha first became involved with LifeSciences Australia through the Annual Conference Planning Committee for the GxP stream. Since then, she has contributed as a training facilitator, conference speaker and volunteer.

💬 “Volunteering with LifeSciences Australia helped me gain confidence as well as connect with other professionals when I was starting out as an independent consultant. It was not just about sharing my expertise but learning from others and broadening my horizon.”

Her advice to others building a career in life sciences is simple: start building your network early and volunteer, even if the opportunity seems small.

What happens when the equipment that helps you breathe is too heavy to take with you?

After 25 years as a respiratory clinician, Jay Flack has seen how oxygen therapy can affect much more than a patient’s breathing.

For some people with COPD, carrying oxygen equipment can make leaving home difficult. Jay told us that for some of his patients, the only time they go out is to attend their medical appointments.

At the ARCS Australia Annual Conference 2024, he made the problem tangible by walking 20 minutes to the venue carrying a standard oxygen cylinder himself.
That experience sits behind Juno, the portable oxygen concentrator developed by Jay and the team at Roam Technologies.

But this BioBeacon conversation isn’t only about making a device smaller and lighter. Jay also talks about the importance of backing medtech claims with head-to-head clinical evidence and real patient data.

As he puts it:
“This is not oxygen for dying. This is oxygen for living.”

A recent TGA inspection report highlighted a sponsor whose serious adverse reaction reports were all submitted late, with some delays exceeding four months.

The cause? Over-reliance on one person and one reporting method, with inadequate oversight and contingency planning.

It's a reminder that PV inspection readiness starts with everyday processes, not when an inspection is announced.

What if the future of bionic vision isn’t an implant at all?

For decades, researchers have explored ways to restore or augment vision through implanted technology. Robert Yearsley, CEO and co-founder of ARIA Research, is taking a very different approach.

ARIA has developed AI-powered smart glasses that map the surrounding environment in 3D and translate it into a real-time soundscape.

Instead of trying to replace vision, the technology builds on senses people with vision disability already use every day, particularly hearing.

The glasses can help a wearer perceive features of the environment through sound, from the location of a doorway or glass barrier to subtle movements such as a nod. And because the technology is wearable, there’s no surgery or implanted device required.

In the latest BioBeacon episode, recorded live at the ARCS Australia Annual Conference 2024, Robert talks about the thinking behind ARIA, the potential to make the technology affordable and accessible, and one of the challenges facing Australian medtech innovators: attracting investment to take an idea from research towards market.
