Delegates get the job done! ✊🏼

This week, delegates from across public health, aged care, private health, disability, and ambulance obtained their HSU delegate training. Delegates are vital to strong and unionised workplaces; collective action, a unified voice and standing side by side their colleagues and fellow members make for improved working conditions and outcomes for all. Gerard Hayes HSU Secretary spoke with delegates about the important role they play in the membership, and their invaluable contribution to HSU.

Congratulations to these delegates!

HSU Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Lynne Russell caught up with members recently at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital and the energy among members was high!

Members from a range of professions reflected on what it means to be part of the HSU: knowing you stand as a collective! HSU members are never alone and have access to industrial and social supports, as well as member benefits to assist in the workplace and beyond.

On the agenda was also HSU's ongoing fight in the Industrial Relations Commission for improved Core Conditions. Public health members from across NSW are filling out the crucial Core Conditions survey and sharing their lived experience on the job to build a strong case for protections that will help to ensure worker and patient safety.

There's absolutely no doubt that members at Hornsby are engaged, alert and united!

This week, we celebrate Orthoptics Awareness Week!

Orthoptists play a vital role across hospitals, private health, community health, research and education, supporting patients and the wider community with best practice and patient centred care. Orthoptists, alongside their fellow Allied Health members, are working together to create real and lasting change through Award Reform.

Orthoptists like the team at Westmead Children’s Hospital continue to fight for better for working in health, patients, and the community!

"We all tend to feel like we work in isolation... what concerns us, concerns us as an entire group."

Nadia, an Occupational Therapist at Westmead Children's Hospital, and HSU Allied Health delegate, speaks about the power of collective action and working together to create lasting change. As the campaign transitions into the last stages before being heard in court, Nadia reflects on the collective journey members have taken to get this far and learnings for the future.

Meet Soheil. Psychologist in NSW Health, and HSU delegate. When asked about why Soheil is so passionate about Award Reform, his answer is simple:

"I love working as a psychologist here [at Sydney Children's Hospital]... I want to get NSW Health psychology back to where it belongs.”

Early career progression plateau and salary limitations not only restrict psychologists in their growth but also pushes health professionals out of public health into other sectors, impacting patient care and support to the community. Dedicated HSU delegates like Soheil are tirelessly advocating and leading the Award reform program to ensure real change occurs.

Meet Alex and Wendy, radiation therapists based in Nepean. Both Alex and Wendy, along with their fellow Allied Health delegates, have been bargaining for a new Award and classification for Radiation Therapists. As the campaign moves into the final stages before it is heard in court, Alex and Wendy provide some insight into the process and their experience representing HSU members.

In the coming months, HSU delegates will file evidence in support of the finalisation of a generational pay increase for Radiation Therapists and other Allied Health clinicians!
