Today on Daffodil Day we honour the cancer journeys of our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, carers, loved ones and ourselves for the resilience, compassion, comfort, tears and laughs along the way.

We’re brought together by the many ways cancer has touched our lives but also by the hope we find in cancer research that’s making more lifesaving discoveries year-on-year.

Daffodil Day is a day to give hope for all of us affected by cancer. It’s about rallying together and supporting people who have faced cancer head-on and honouring the ones we lost too soon. Aggressive brain tumours like Medulloblastoma (MB) and Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) still have limited treatment options and poor survival rates.

One reason these tumours are so aggressive is they can have very high levels of cancer-promoting proteins that act like fuel, helping cancer grow and spread.

A/Prof Cheung and her team are developing a new treatment strategy to target aggressive childhood brain cancers driven by this cancer-promoting protein.

This discovery is a critically important development that renews hope for Australian families impacted by a devastating brain cancer diagnosis.

With your help, Cancer Council can fund such ground-breaking work from the lab bench to the bedside and help change the future for children with brain cancer.

This year Daffodil Day celebrates 40 years of growing hope!

For 40 years Daffodil Day has helped grow hope in the community as we’ve come together to improve outcomes for people with cancer. We’ve come a long way in that time and we hope the next 40 years of cancer research will see everyone diagnosed with cancer surviving their diagnosis with a treatment plan that’s just right for them.

It’s absolutely possible, and we’re here to help make it happen.

Doug was inspired to take on the Daffodil Day Dip challenge in honour of two of his great friends who lost their lives to cancer. Their memory continues to drive him, and this challenge has become something deeply meaningful.

By swimming 500m every workday in the unheated pool at the Aquatic Centre where he works, Doug has found the experience both physically challenging and incredibly healing. It’s become a space for reflection, resilience, and purpose.

Last year, Susan and her team in Victoria, the Aspendale Otters, took part in the Daffodil Day Dip in honour of Anne and Ruth, both facing pancreatic cancer.

What started as a small group of locals has grown into a close-knit community, swimming every day through August and supporting each other every step of the way. Their final Dip brought wild weather and crashing waves, but they pushed through, cheered on by their community.

"Being part of a team made all the difference — it kept us connected, motivated and supported."

Together, they raised over $8,000 which was far beyond their goal, showing the power of coming together for a cause that matters.

In April 2024, Vanessa's husband Greg was diagnosed with an aggressive lung cancer. In December of that year, he sadly passed away.

Vanessa first signed up to do 10 dips but ended up doing 28! Not bad for someone who wasn't sure if she could do it.

"It was a cathartic experience. It became addictive. I dressed up and had so much fun. I thought of Greg and others with cancer and how hard they fight. I drew strength and motivation from them. I felt close to him every dip I did."
